About Lauren Hutton
Lauren Hutton, born Mary Laurence Hutton on November 17, 1943, is an American model and actress. She gained widespread recognition in the fashion industry for her signature gap-toothed smile and her landmark 1973 modeling contract with Revlon, which was the largest in the industry's history at the time. Over a career spanning several decades, Hutton achieved prominent success as both a high-fashion cover girl and an actress in film and television.
Hutton was born in Charleston, South Carolina, to Lawrence Bryan Hutton and Minnie Behrens Hutton. Following her parents' post-World War II divorce in 1945, she relocated with her mother to Florida, growing up primarily in Tampa. She took her stepfather's surname, Hall, after her mother remarried in 1949. Hutton graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1961 and attended the University of South Florida before moving to New York City, where she worked as a Playboy Club waitress. She later attended Newcomb College at Tulane University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964.
In the mid-1960s, she adopted the name Lauren Hutton and began modeling professionally in New York City. Despite initial advice from agents to conceal the gap between her front teeth, she chose to retain it as part of her look. Her major breakthrough occurred in 1973 when she signed a groundbreaking $250,000-a-year contract with Revlon to represent its Ultima II brand. The ten-year arrangement established her status as a leading fashion figure and led to a record 26 appearances on the cover of American Vogue. She later re-partnered with Revlon in the 1990s as the spokeswoman for its Results line and launched her own cosmetic brand, Lauren Hutton's Good Stuff.
Alongside her modeling, Hutton built an extensive acting career. She made her feature film debut in the 1968 sports drama Paper Lion alongside Alan Alda. She subsequently earned key roles in films such as The Gambler (1974), John Carpenter's television movie Someone's Watching Me! (1978), and American Gigolo (1980). Her later film credits include Lassiter, Once Bitten, Guilty as Charged, and the 2009 film The Joneses. On television, Hutton appeared in series such as Paper Dolls, Falcon Crest, Central Park West, and Nip/Tuck, and hosted her own late-night talk show, Lauren Hutton and..., from 1995 to 1997.
Hutton continued modeling into her sixties and seventies, remaining active in major campaigns and runway shows. She walked the runway for Tom Ford's spring 2012 collection and for Bottega Veneta during Milan Fashion Week in 2016. Her advertising work includes campaigns for brands such as H&M, Lord & Taylor, Alexander Wang, Club Monaco, Barneys New York, and David Jones, as well as lookbook appearances for The Row. Outside of entertainment, she served as the original vice-president of the Guggenheim Museum Motorcycle Club and became a board member of the National Museum of Women in Arts in 2003.
