Hailee Steinfeld

Hailee Steinfeld is an American actress and singer born on December 11, 1996. She first gained wide recognition for her breakthrough performance in the 2010 western film True Grit, which earned her critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination. Since her debut, she has established a multi-faceted career across feature films, television, voice acting, and popular music.

Steinfeld was born in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, to Cheri, an interior designer, and Peter Steinfeld, a personal trainer. Raised in Agoura Hills and Thousand Oaks, she has an older brother named Griffin. Her extended family includes relatives in the entertainment and fitness industries, including her cousin True O'Brien, whose appearance in a commercial inspired Steinfeld to pursue acting at age eight. She attended public and private schools in California before being home-schooled from 2008 until her high school graduation in June 2015.

After acting in short films starting at age ten, Steinfeld was cast at age thirteen as Mattie Ross in True Grit. Her performance received praise from film critics and earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, as well as nominations for a BAFTA Award, a Critics' Choice Movie Award, and an Actor Award. Following this success, she became the face of the designer brand Miu Miu in 2011. Over the next several years, she appeared in films such as Romeo and Juliet, Ender's Game, Begin Again, Ten Thousand Saints, and Barely Lethal, while also providing voice work for the English dub of When Marnie Was There.

In 2015, Steinfeld expanded into music after performing the song "Flashlight" in the musical comedy Pitch Perfect 2. She subsequently signed with Republic Records and released her debut single, "Love Myself," followed by her debut extended play, Haiz, later that year. Her music career expanded with successful singles including "Starving," a collaboration with Grey and Zedd, as well as "Most Girls" and "Let Me Go." She later released a second extended play, Half Written Story, in 2020 and contributed songs to various film soundtracks.

Alongside her music career, Steinfeld continued to build a prominent acting filmography. She starred in the coming-of-age film The Edge of Seventeen in 2016, earning a Golden Globe Award nomination. She later starred in the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee and began voicing Gwen Stacy in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequels. From 2019 to 2021, she portrayed poet Emily Dickinson in the Apple TV+ period comedy series Dickinson, which won a Peabody Award in 2020.

In recent years, Steinfeld joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kate Bishop, debuting in the Disney+ series Hawkeye in 2021, with later appearances in The Marvels, What If...?, and Marvel Zombies. She also voices Vi in the Netflix adult animated series Arcane. Her later projects include starring in Ryan Coogler's film Sinners, as well as upcoming voice roles in the animated films Hexed and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
