Early Life and Education

Yang was born on January 18, 1986, in Waco, Texas, and raised in Pflugerville, Texas, as the son of South Korean immigrants. Growing up as one of the few Asian American youth in his community, he developed an early interest in the arts, participating in dance, choir, theater, and visual arts. Encouraged by a middle school teacher to pursue filmmaking, he went on to attend the University of Southern California (USC) School of Cinematic Arts. He graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Cinema Production, embarking on a career in freelance video direction and production.

Career and Content

In 2013, Yang joined BuzzFeed Motion Pictures, where he worked as a director and producer. During his time at BuzzFeed, he teamed up with colleagues Ned Fulmer, Keith Habersberger, and Zach Kornfeld to form The Try Guys in 2014. The comedy franchise quickly became a viral sensation for its adventurous, challenge-based videos. In 2018, the group departed BuzzFeed to launch their independent production company, 2nd Try LLC. In addition to online videos, Yang has directed acclaimed personal projects, including his 2019 music dance coming-out video "I'm Gay," and voiced the character Ambrosius Goldenloin in the animated feature film Nimona (2023).
