About Lizzo
Melissa Viviane Jefferson, known professionally as Lizzo, is an American singer, rapper, songwriter, and actress. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on April 27, 1988, she moved to Houston, Texas, at the age of ten. Classically trained as a flutist from a young age through her studies at the University of Houston, she began rapping in high school and formed her first musical group, Cornrow Clique, at age 14. She eventually relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2011 to pursue her recording career.
In Minneapolis, Lizzo performed with several groups, including the electro soul-pop duo Lizzo & the Larva Ink, the rap/R&B trio the Chalice, and the hip-hop group Grrrl Prty. She released her debut solo hip-hop album, Lizzobangers, in October 2013, followed by her second studio album, Big Grrrl Small World, in December 2015.
Lizzo signed with Atlantic Records in 2016 and released her major-label debut extended play, Coconut Oil, which marked her first entry on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Her mainstream breakthrough arrived with her third studio album, Cuz I Love You (2019), which peaked at number four on the US Billboard 200. The album featured the multi-platinum single "Juice" and was boosted by the viral success of her 2017 single "Truth Hurts", which was added to the deluxe edition and topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks.
Her fourth studio album, Special, was released in July 2022 and was led by the single "About Damn Time", which became her second Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit. Following a temporary hiatus, she released her third mixtape, My Face Hurts from Smiling, in 2025, followed by her fifth studio album, Bitch, in 2026.
Beyond her music career, Lizzo has voiced a role in the animated film UglyDolls (2019) and appeared in the crime comedy-drama Hustlers (2019). She also hosted the Amazon Prime Video reality competition series Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls. Over her career, she has earned numerous accolades, including four Grammy Awards—notably winning Record of the Year for "About Damn Time"—a Primetime Emmy Award, a Billboard Music Award, a BET Award, and two Soul Train Music Awards.
