Nelly Furtado

Nelly Kim Furtado is a Canadian singer and songwriter known for her musical versatility and genre experimentation. Over the course of her career, she has sold more than 45 million records worldwide, including 35 million albums, establishing her as one of Canada's most successful musical artists. She achieved global prominence with hits spanning pop, trip hop, folk, R&B, and hip-hop.

Furtado was born on December 2, 1978, in Victoria, British Columbia. Her parents, António José and Maria Manuela Furtado, immigrated to Canada from São Miguel Island in the Azores during the late 1960s. Raised in a Catholic household, Furtado began singing in Portuguese at age four. By age nine, she was playing the trombone and ukulele, later learning the guitar and keyboards. She began writing songs at age twelve and performed in a Portuguese marching band as a teenager.

After graduating from Mount Douglas Secondary School in 1996, Furtado moved to Toronto. She formed the trip hop duo Nelstar with Tallis Newkirk, but eventually left the group to pursue a broader sound. In 1997, her performance at the Honey Jam talent show caught the attention of Gerald Eaton of The Philosopher Kings. Eaton and Brian West helped her produce a demo, leading to a record deal with DreamWorks Records in 1999.

Furtado released her debut studio album, Whoa, Nelly!, in October 2000. Incorporating trip hop elements, the album achieved critical and commercial success, supported by top-10 Billboard Hot 100 singles such as "I'm Like a Bird" and "Turn Off the Light". The former earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She followed this in November 2003 with Folklore, an introspective, folk-oriented album reflecting her Portuguese heritage that included the UEFA Euro 2004 anthem "Força".

Her third studio album, Loose (2006), marked a major reinvention of her sound and image. Primarily produced by Timbaland and incorporating R&B, hip-hop, and 1980s pop influences, Loose sold over 10 million copies worldwide. The album produced major international number-one singles including "Promiscuous", "Maneater", "Say It Right", and "All Good Things (Come to an End)". During this period, she also scored chart successes with featured roles on Timbaland's "Give It to Me" and James Morrison's "Broken Strings".

In 2009, Furtado released her first Spanish-language album, Mi Plan, which won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Album. She released The Spirit Indestructible in 2012 before transitioning to independent releases through her own label, Nelstar Entertainment, including The Ride (2017) and 7 (2024).

Throughout her career, Furtado has earned numerous accolades, including ten Juno Awards, a Brit Award, a Billboard Music Award, an MTV Europe Music Award, a World Music Award, and three MuchMusic Video Awards. She received a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in 2010 and was appointed a Commander of the Order of Prince Henry in 2014.
