Luc Besson

Luc Paul Maurice Besson is a French filmmaker, writer, and producer known for his contributions to international action and science fiction cinema. Emerging in the 1980s as a central figure associated with the Cinéma du look film movement, he established a distinct visual style that gained wide public attention. Over the course of his career, Besson has been involved as a director, screenwriter, or producer in the creation of more than 50 feature films.

Born in Paris in 1959 to scuba-diving instructor parents, Besson spent much of his youth traveling to resort locations across several European nations. He originally planned to become a marine biologist, but a diving accident at age 17 left him unable to continue the activity. He subsequently turned his focus to writing and film, eventually returning to Paris to take entry-level jobs on sets, serve as an assistant director, and direct short films and commercials.

Besson achieved widespread recognition with early feature films including Subway, The Big Blue, and La Femme Nikita. Despite receiving negative initial reviews at its Cannes Film Festival premiere, The Big Blue became a major commercial phenomenon in France, selling millions of tickets and becoming a defining cultural film for younger audiences. During this period, Besson formed his first production company, initially named Les Films du Loup and later renamed Les Films du Dauphin.

During the 1990s, Besson directed critically and commercially successful international releases, such as Léon: The Professional and the sci-fi feature The Fifth Element, followed by The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc. Beyond directing, he expanded his work as a writer and producer, creating popular action properties like the Taxi and Transporter franchises, co-writing the Taken series, and authoring the Arthur fantasy book series, which he later adapted into a feature-length film series.

In 2000, Besson co-founded the production company EuropaCorp alongside Pierre-Ange Le Pogam to produce French-based films intended for international release. Through EuropaCorp, he directed the global box office hit Lucy in 2014, as well as the high-budget sci-fi feature Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets in 2017 and the action film Anna in 2019. In subsequent years, he explored new filming methods, including directing June & John using smartphones during a pandemic lockdown and employing virtual production techniques for Dogman.

Besson's recent projects include directing the 2023 drama Dogman, which was selected to compete at the Venice International Film Festival, and a 2024 adaptation of Dracula. His upcoming slate includes directing the post-apocalyptic film The Last Man and writing and producing Father Joe. Throughout his career, Besson has earned several industry honors, including a César Award and a Lumière Award for Best Director for The Fifth Element.
