Guillaume Canet

Guillaume Arthur Jean-Louis Canet is a French actor, film director, screenwriter, and equestrian show jumper. Born on 10 April 1973 in Boulogne-Billancourt, he initially gained recognition through his work in theatre and television before transitioning to mainstream cinema, eventually establishing himself as a prominent actor and filmmaker.

Raised in a family of horse breeders, Canet originally trained to become a professional show jumper and earned a position on the junior French National Equestrian Team. Following a severe riding accident at the age of 18, he abandoned his equestrian ambitions to pursue acting, enrolling at the Cours Florent drama school. He made his professional stage debut in 1994 in a production of La Ville dont le prince est un enfant, subsequently appearing in television shows, commercials, and the short film Fils unique.

Canet attracted critical notice in 1997 for his performance in the thriller Barracuda, which earned him a best actor award at the Festival Saint-Jean-de-Luz. His work as Vincent Mazet in the comedy En plein cœur resulted in a César Award nomination. Expanding into international projects, he landed a role in Danny Boyle's film The Beach, followed by appearances in La fidélité, The Day the Ponies Come Back, and the science fiction feature Vidocq.

In 2002, Canet made his feature directorial debut with Mon Idole, a project he also wrote and starred in alongside his then-wife Diane Kruger. The following year, he starred opposite Marion Cotillard in Yann Samuell's romantic feature Love Me If You Dare, which became a sleeper hit. He subsequently appeared in the international historical drama Joyeux Noël, a depiction of the World War I Christmas truce that received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

Canet achieved major success with his second directorial feature, the 2006 thriller Tell No One, adapted from a novel by Harlan Coben. The project became one of the highest-grossing domestic films of the year and secured four César Awards, including Best Director for Canet. His later directorial and acting ventures included Blood Ties, which screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013, as well as productions such as Little White Lies, Rock'n Roll, and Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom.

In his personal life, Canet married model and actress Diane Kruger in 2001, but the couple divorced in 2006 due to conflicting international work schedules. He was later linked with Carla Bruni and Élodie Navarre before entering a long-term relationship with actress Marion Cotillard in late 2007. The couple had two children, a son born in 2011 and a daughter in 2017, before publicly announcing their mutual separation in June 2025. Canet resides in Paris.

Alongside his entertainment career, Canet returned to competitive equestrian sports later in life. Between 2012 and 2017, he entered 623 show jumping competitions, securing 33 victories and accumulating nearly 67,000 euros in prize money while placing in international events in Paris, La Baule, and Chantilly.
