Bérénice Bejo

Bérénice Bejo is a French-Argentine actress widely recognized for her standout screen roles, including Christiana in the 2001 feature A Knight's Tale and Peppy Miller in the 2011 film The Artist. Over the course of her acting career, she has earned significant critical acclaim and major awards across the international motion picture industry.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bejo is the daughter of a lawyer named Silvia and Argentine filmmaker Miguel Bejo. When she was three years old, her family relocated to France to escape the civil-military dictatorship that governed Argentina from 1976 to 1983.

Bejo made her debut in American cinema in 2001, portraying Christiana, a lady-in-waiting to Shannyn Sossamon's character Jocelyn, opposite Heath Ledger in A Knight's Tale. The following year, she toured France in a production alongside Marie-France Pisier and Guillaume Depardieu. Her screen presence expanded throughout the early 2000s in projects such as Laurent Bouhnik's 2003 film 24 Hours in the Life of a Woman, Steve Suissa's 2004 actor-centered comedy The Grand Role, and the 2005 disability-focused drama Cavalcade.

In 2006, Bejo acted alongside Jean Dujardin in the Michel Hazanavicius film OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies, marking the first collaborative project between the three figures. She subsequently appeared in the 2007 short film La Pomme d'Adam and two 2008 romantic comedies, Modern Love Bouquet and Stéphane Kazandjian. In 2009, she participated in Serge Bromberg's documentary Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno, performing dialogue readings alongside Jacques Gamblin to help reconstruct scenes from an uncompleted 1964 movie.

Bejo achieved international prominence for her portrayal of 1920s movie star Peppy Miller in the 2011 film The Artist, directed by Hazanavicius and co-starring Dujardin. Her performance earned her the César Award for Best Actress, alongside nominations for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. She was also honored with the Prix Romy Schneider in 2012.

Following her success with The Artist, Bejo hosted the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, voiced Mérida in the French dub of the animated feature Brave, and joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 2013, she received the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and a César Award nomination for her role in The Past.

In her personal life, Bejo met Hazanavicius while working on OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies in 2006, and they later married. The couple had their first child in 2008 and share two children together. Among her announced projects, Bejo was cast as early cinematic pioneer Alice Guy-Blaché in Alice, a six-part drama series slated for 2026.
