Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Pankaj Kapoor is an Indian film actor who primarily works in Hindi language cinema. Initially recognized for playing romantic leads, he later expanded his repertoire into action films and thrillers. Recognized as one of India's highest-earning performers, he has been featured on Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list since 2012 and has earned multiple accolades, including three Filmfare Awards.

Born in New Delhi on February 25, 1981, Kapoor is the son of performer Pankaj Kapur and actor-dancer Neelima Azeem. His maternal lineage includes author and filmmaker Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. Following his parents' separation when he was three, he remained in Delhi with his mother and maternal grandparents, who worked as journalists translating Urdu literature into Russian. At age ten, he relocated to Mumbai when his mother pursued an acting career. Through his parents' later marriages, he has three half-siblings, including actor Ishaan Khatter. He received his education at Gyan Bharati School in Delhi, Rajhans Vidyalaya in Mumbai, and Mithibai College.

Kapoor developed a passion for dance during his youth and enrolled in Shiamak Davar's dance academy at age fifteen. He featured as a background dancer in feature films such as Dil To Pagal Hai and Taal before becoming an instructor at the institute. His early career also involved appearing in television commercials for brands like Pepsi, Kit Kat, and Close-Up, as well as several music videos. Additionally, he gained behind-the-scenes experience by serving as an assistant director on his father's 1998 television program Mohandas B.A.L.L.B.

Following acting workshops and physical preparation, Kapoor made his leading debut in the 2003 teenage romantic comedy Ishq Vishk. The project became a sleeper hit and earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. While his subsequent releases over the next few years struggled at the box office, he achieved major commercial success starring in the family drama Vivah in 2006.

Kapoor earned critical acclaim and a Filmfare Best Actor nomination for playing a troubled businessman in the romantic comedy Jab We Met (2007). He garnered further praise for playing twin brothers with speech impairments in the action thriller Kaminey (2009). Despite a series of commercial fluctuations in projects such as Badmaash Company, Mausam, and Teri Meri Kahaani, he recorded a significant financial success with the action film R... Rajkumar in 2013.

Critical acclaim continued with his portrayal of a Hamlet-inspired character in the tragedy Haider (2014), which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor, and a drug-abusing singer in Udta Punjab (2016), for which he received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. He subsequently achieved the highest-grossing film releases of his career with the period drama Padmaavat (2018) and the romantic drama Kabir Singh (2019).

Kapoor's recent projects include starring in the crime drama series Farzi (2023) and the romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024). Outside of feature film acting, he has hosted award presentations, served as a judge on the dance competition show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded in 2015, and participated in charitable work. He is married to Mira Rajput, and the couple has two children.
