Hrithik Roshan, born Hritik Rakesh Nagrath on 10 January 1974, is an Indian actor and film producer active in Hindi cinema. Renowned for his dancing talent and dramatic range, he is recognized as one of the highest-paid actors in India. Over his career, he has earned six Filmfare Awards, including four for Best Actor, and has been featured multiple times on Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list starting in 2012.
Roshan was born in Bombay, Maharashtra, into a prominent film family of Punjabi and Bengali heritage. His father, Rakesh Roshan, is a director, and his mother, Pinkie, is the daughter of producer-director J. Om Prakash. In his childhood, Roshan experienced social isolation due to an extra fused thumb on his right hand and developed a stammer at age six, which he managed through speech therapy. During his early twenties, he was diagnosed with scoliosis, but he overcame physical obstacles to pursue acting while completing a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Sydenham College.
After minor appearances as a child actor in films such as Aasha (1980) and Bhagwaan Dada (1986), Roshan worked behind the scenes as an assistant director on four of his father's productions. He made his adult leading debut in the 2000 romantic drama Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. Performing dual roles, he achieved sudden fame and became the first actor to win both the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut and Best Actor for the same film. Later that year, he starred in the crime drama Fiza and the action drama Mission Kashmir.
Following a supporting role in the hit ensemble drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) and a series of commercial setbacks, Roshan revitalized his career with the 2003 science fiction film Koi... Mil Gaya. Playing a developmentally disabled youth, he earned two Filmfare Awards. He later reprised his role and played a superhero in its sequels, Krrish (2006) and Krrish 3 (2013). His portrayal of an enigmatic thief in the action sequel Dhoom 2 (2006) secured him his third Filmfare Best Actor award.
Roshan continued to take on varied roles, playing an army officer in Lakshya (2004), Mughal emperor Akbar in Jodhaa Akbar (2008), and a quadriplegic in Guzaarish (2010). He expanded his commercial success with the comedy-drama Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), the revenge drama Agneepath (2012), the biographical film Super 30 (2019), and a series of action features directed by Siddharth Anand, including Bang Bang! (2014), War (2019), and Fighter (2024).
Beyond feature films, Roshan debuted on television in 2011 as a judge on the dance reality show Just Dance, becoming the highest-paid film star on Indian television at the time. He has also performed on stage, launched his own clothing line, endorsed numerous commercial brands, and supported various humanitarian endeavors. Roshan was married for fourteen years to Sussanne Khan, with whom he shares two children.
