Born on 27 July 1990 in New Delhi to a Punjabi Hindu family, Sanon grew up with a mother who worked as a university physics professor and a father who worked as a chartered accountant. She attended Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram, before earning a Bachelor of Technology in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology. Prior to pursuing acting full-time, she spent time working as a fashion model.

Sanon made her screen debut in 2014 with the Telugu film 1: Nenokkadine. In the same year, she entered Hindi cinema as the female lead in the action film Heropanti, a commercially successful performance that won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She subsequently appeared in the Telugu crime drama Dohchay and the ensemble action comedy Dilwale, which became one of the top-grossing Indian films of its era.

Her career continued to develop through varied genres. In 2017, she starred in the romance Raabta and earned critical praise for her role as an independent woman in the romantic comedy Bareilly Ki Barfi. She achieved further box-office hits in 2019 with the romantic comedy Luka Chuppi and the ensemble comedy Housefull 4, alongside roles in Arjun Patiala and the period film Panipat.

A notable highlight of her filmography came with the 2021 comedy-drama Mimi, in which she played a young woman who becomes a surrogate mother. Her performance won her the National Film Award for Best Actress alongside the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Over the following years, she featured in a diverse array of projects, including Hum Do Hamare Do, Bachchhan Paandey, Bhediya, Shehzada, the mythological epic Adipurush, and the action film Ganapath.

In 2024, Sanon returned to commercial popularity with the science-fiction romance Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya and the heist comedy Crew. She also launched her own production company, Blue Butterfly Films, through which she produced and played dual roles in the mystery film Do Patti. Her subsequent roles included the romantic dramas Tere Ishk Mein and Cocktail 2.

In addition to acting, Sanon is an entrepreneur and celebrity endorser for multiple prominent brands. She launched her clothing line Ms. Taken in 2016, co-founded the fitness venture The Tribe in 2022, and launched the skincare line Hyphen in 2023. She has also participated in charitable causes and performed at major athletic event ceremonies.
