Over the course of his career, he has received numerous recognitions, including three Filmfare Awards South and five South Indian International Movie Awards.
Born in the village of Boovanahalli in Hassan, Karnataka, Yash was raised by his father Arun Kumar, a transit bus driver, and his mother Pushpa, a homemaker. He was given the legal name Naveen and the family name Yashwanth, which he later shortened to Yash as a unique professional alias. He pursued his education at the Mahajana Education Society in Mysore, where he actively took part in school theater and dance events. In 2003, at age sixteen, he moved to Bangalore to work as an assistant director, despite initial objections from his parents. When the production was cancelled, he remained in the city and joined the Benaka drama troupe founded by B. V. Karanth, initially working as a backstage assistant before stepping into stage roles.
Yash began his television career in 2004 with the serial Uttarayana and subsequently appeared in television shows such as Nanda Gokula, Male Billu, and Preeti Illada Mele. He made his feature film debut in 2007 with a supporting role in Jambada Hudugi. His breakthrough arrived the following year in the teen drama Moggina Manasu (2008), for which he earned the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor – Kannada. Although his initial lead feature, Rocky (2008), was commercially unsuccessful, he continued appearing in films such as Kallara Santhe (2009) and Gokula (2009).
Yash achieved his first commercial hit as a solo lead in the romantic comedy Modalasala (2010). He subsequently solidified his position in Kannada cinema through successful roles in Rajadhani (2011), Kirataka (2011), Lucky (2012), Jaanu (2012), and the hit comedy Drama (2012). In 2013, following a brief appearance in the bilingual project Chandra, he starred in the highly profitable college romance Googly and the comedy-drama Raja Huli. His streak of successful films continued with Gajakesari (2014), the romantic feature Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari (2014), Masterpiece (2015), and Santhu Straight Forward (2016).
Yash attained nationwide prominence through Prashanth Neel's action production KGF: Chapter 1 (2018). The project set a box office record for Kannada cinema at the time and won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Kannada. He reprised his role as Rocky in the 2022 sequel, KGF: Chapter 2, which became the highest-grossing Kannada production worldwide and one of the highest-earning Indian movies in history.
Outside of his screen career, Yash participates in philanthropic work and established the charitable Yasho Marga Foundation alongside his wife. He married actress Radhika Pandit in December 2016 after meeting on the set of Nanda Gokula, and the couple has two children.
