Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri Dixit Nene is an Indian film actress and television personality who gained widespread popularity through her performances in Hindi cinema. Over a career spanning several decades, she has appeared in dozens of feature films and emerged as a prominent figure in the Indian entertainment industry. Known for her acting versatility and dancing skills, she was one of the highest-paid female stars in India during the 1990s and early 2000s. Her contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including six Filmfare Awards from seventeen nominations, as well as the Padma Shri, the country's fourth-highest civilian award, presented in 2008.

Dixit was born on May 15, 1967, in Bombay, India, into a Marathi family with two older sisters and an older brother. From the age of three, she developed a passion for dance and underwent eight years of formal training in Kathak. She attended Divine Child High School in Andheri, participating in extracurricular activities such as theater. She initially intended to pursue a scientific career and enrolled at Sathaye College to study microbiology. However, six months into her undergraduate studies, she decided to leave college to pursue a full-time acting career.

Dixit made her film debut in 1984 with the drama Abodh. While her initial releases faced commercial difficulties, she achieved a major breakthrough with the 1988 action drama Tezaab. The film became the year's highest-grossing release and secured her a Filmfare Award nomination. Following this success, she rapidly established herself as a leading star through hits like Ram Lakhan, Tridev, and Parinda in 1989, demonstrating both commercial appeal and dramatic talent.

Throughout the 1990s, Dixit solidified her position at the forefront of the industry with a series of major box-office successes. She received Filmfare Awards for Best Actress for her leading roles in romantic dramas such as Dil in 1990, Beta in 1992, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! in 1994, and Dil To Pagal Hai in 1997. Her role in Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! gained immense popularity, making it the highest-grossing Hindi film of its era. During this period, she also achieved commercial success with films including Thanedaar, Saajan, Khalnayak, and Raja.

Alongside her commercial ventures, Dixit earned critical acclaim for her roles in films such as Prem Pratigyaa, Anjaam, Mrityudand, Pukar, and Lajja. In 2002, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing Chandramukhi in the romantic drama Devdas. Following a brief break from active filmmaking, she returned to the screen in the 2007 musical Aaja Nachle, after which she chose to work on select film projects intermittently.

In subsequent years, Dixit expanded into television, notably serving as a judge on dance competition shows such as Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Dance Deewane. Her later acting credits include the dark comedy Dedh Ishqiya, the drama series The Fame Game, and successful comedy feature films like Total Dhamaal and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Outside of acting, she co-founded the production company RnM Moving Pictures and has worked with UNICEF since 2014 to promote children's rights. She married Shriram Nene in 1999, and the couple has two sons.
