Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan (born 1 January 1979) is an Indian actress recognized for transforming the representation of women in Hindi cinema through her lead roles in female-centric films. Her accolades include a National Film Award, seven Filmfare Awards, and the Padma Shri, awarded by the Government of India in 2014. In 2021, she was invited to join the Actors Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Born in Bombay (now Mumbai) into a Tamil Brahmin family, Vidya was raised in Chembur by her father, P. R. Balan, an executive vice-president at Digicable, and her mother, Saraswathy, a homemaker. Inspired by actresses Shabana Azmi and Madhuri Dixit, she pursued acting from a young age, appearing at 16 as Radhika in the television sitcom Hum Paanch. After completing her schooling at St. Anthony Girls' High School, she earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from St. Xavier's College and later a master's degree from the University of Mumbai.

While completing her higher education, Vidya experienced several setbacks in establishing a film career. Her planned Malayalam debut, Chakram, was shelved, leading local producers to brand her unfavorably and cancel other contracts. She subsequently faced replacements in Tamil projects such as Run, Bala, and Manasellam, while another completed Malayalam film, Kalari Vikraman, failed to achieve a theatrical release. As a result, she shifted to appearing in approximately 60 television commercials and music videos, many directed by Pradeep Sarkar.

Vidya made her feature film debut in the 2003 Bengali drama Bhalo Theko, earning an Anandalok Purashkar for Best Actress. She made her Hindi debut in Parineeta (2005), winning the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She followed this with major commercial successes, including Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006) and the comedy horror film Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007). Although she faced critical backlash and poor box-office returns for glamorous roles in films such as Heyy Babyy and Kismat Konnection, she continued to explore varied genres.

Her career achieved a major breakthrough with R. Balki's Paa (2009), in which her role as a single mother earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She consolidated her reputation as a leading dramatic actress by playing a manipulative widow in Ishqiya (2010) and real-life campaigner Sabrina in No One Killed Jessica (2011). Vidya won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in The Dirty Picture (2011) and received further critical praise for starring as a pregnant woman in the Kolkata-set thriller Kahaani (2012).

Following a brief career downturn, Vidya regained commercial momentum portraying working women in Tumhari Sulu (2017) and Mission Mangal (2019). She later starred in digital film releases including Shakuntala Devi (2020), Sherni (2021), and Jalsa (2022), before earning her highest-grossing film release with the comedy horror sequel Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (2024).

In addition to her film career, Vidya advocates for women's empowerment and humanitarian causes, serves as a member of the Indian Central Board of Film Certification, and has worked as a radio show host. While early media coverage criticized her weight and fashion choices, she was later recognized for her unconventional path in the film industry. She is married to film producer Siddharth Roy Kapur.
