Sana attended the EXPG studio in Osaka during her youth before being scouted by JYP Entertainment in 2011. She subsequently relocated to South Korea in 2012 to undertake formal training. In 2015, she competed on the reality television show Sixteen, earning a spot in Twice's final lineup. The group debuted in October 2015 with the mini-album The Story Begins and achieved significant commercial success across Asia and internationally.
