About Yoo Jeong-yeon

Yu Jeong-yeon, known mononymously as Jeongyeon, is a South Korean singer. She is widely known as a member of the South Korean girl group Twice, which was formed by JYP Entertainment.

Jeongyeon was born as Yu Kyung-wan on November 1, 1996, in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. She has two older sisters, one of whom is actress Gong Seung-yeon, and her father worked as a chef for former South Korean president Kim Dae-jung. At a young age, Jeongyeon took aerobics classes and subsequently developed an interest in singing and dancing.

After failing an initial audition as a child, Jeongyeon joined JYP Entertainment after passing an audition in 2010. She trained for five years, during which a planned 2014 debut with a group featuring future bandmates Nayeon, Sana, and Jihyo was cancelled. In 2015, she competed on the reality television program Sixteen and was selected as one of the final nine members of Twice. She officially debuted with the group in October 2015 upon the release of their first EP, The Story Begins, and its lead single "Like Ooh-Ahh".

Beyond group activities, Jeongyeon co-hosted the music program Inkigayo alongside her sister from July 2016 to January 2017, earning the Newcomer Award at the 2016 SBS Entertainment Awards. She has also contributed as a songwriter for several Twice tracks. Between 2016 and 2019, she was voted among the top 20 most popular idols in South Korea for four consecutive years in Gallup Korea's annual music poll.

Jeongyeon experienced health breaks during her career. In 2020, she underwent surgery for a herniated spinal disc and was later diagnosed with Cushing's syndrome as a side effect of steroid medication. She took a hiatus for anxiety in October 2020 before returning in January 2021, and took a second hiatus for panic and anxiety disorder in August 2021 before resuming group activities in February 2022. She renewed her contract with JYP Entertainment alongside her bandmates later that year.

In recent years, Jeongyeon expanded into solo projects. She released a cover of "O Christmas Tree" for Apple Music in November 2023 and began hosting the YouTube talk show Inspector in July 2024, raising funds for ChildFund Korea. In June 2025, she performed "Takedown" alongside bandmates Jihyo and Chaeyoung for the Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters, marking her first solo entry on the US Billboard Hot 100 where it peaked at number 50. In July 2025, she was announced to make her acting debut in New Recruit: The Movie. In August 2026, Jeongyeon signed with Varo Entertainment while maintaining her status as a member of Twice.
