Boy George

George Alan O'Dowd, known professionally as Boy George, is a British musician, songwriter, and DJ born on 14 June 1961. He is best known as the lead singer of the pop band Culture Club, as well as a solo artist and former lead singer of the group Jesus Loves You. His musical work spans several genres, including pop, new wave, soul, soft rock, disco, and reggae.

Boy George was born at Barnehurst Hospital in Kent, England, to Jerry and Dinah O'Dowd, and was raised in Eltham, south-east London, in a working-class Irish Catholic family. He attended Middle Park Infant School and Eltham Green Secondary School, leaving at age 15 without qualifications. Before pursuing music full-time, he worked as a fruit picker, printer, makeup artist, and model. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, he emerged as part of the UK New Romantic movement, drawing stylistic inspiration from glam rock figures such as Marc Bolan, David Bowie, and Siouxsie Sioux.

After performing briefly with the group Bow Wow Wow under the stage name Lieutenant Lush, Boy George formed his own band in 1981 alongside Mikey Craig, Jon Moss, and Roy Hay, selecting the name Culture Club. The group achieved rapid global success with their 1982 debut album, Kissing to Be Clever, which sold roughly 5 million copies worldwide. Their second album, Colour by Numbers (1983), topped the UK charts and sold over 10 million copies internationally. The band produced major hits such as "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" and "Karma Chameleon" before disbanding in 1986.

Following Culture Club's split, Boy George launched his solo career in 1987 with the album Sold, which featured the UK number-one single "Everything I Own". Between 1989 and 1992, he recorded as the lead singer of Jesus Loves You, producing singles including "Bow Down Mister" and "Generations of Love". He also began working as a DJ in the mid-1990s. Across his career, he has released 11 solo studio albums, 48 singles, seven DJ albums, three EPs, and soundtrack recordings, including the title hit for the film The Crying Game.

Boy George has reunited with Culture Club on multiple occasions, releasing the album Don't Mind If I Do in 1999 and participating in several reunion tours. Outside of music, his creative projects include mixed media art, writing books, fashion design, and photography. His television appearances include a 1986 episode of The A-Team and competing on the UK series I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in November 2022, where he finished in eighth place. In 2026, he provided uncredited vocals for Senhit's Eurovision song "Superstar".

Throughout his career, Boy George has received recognition for his contributions to music. In 2001, he was voted 46th in a BBC poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. In 2015, he received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Services to British Music from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.
