Kim Tae-yeon, known mononymously as Taeyeon, is a South Korean singer who rose to prominence after debuting as a member of the girl group Girls' Generation in August 2007. The group achieved widespread recognition as one of the best-selling musical acts in South Korea and one of the most prominent K-pop groups internationally. Beyond her primary group activities, she has participated in several other projects managed by SM Entertainment, including the sub-units Girls' Generation-TTS and Girls' Generation-Oh!GG, the ballad project group SM the Ballad, and the supergroup Got the Beat.

Taeyeon was born on March 9, 1989, in Wansan District, Jeonju, South Korea. Raised alongside an older brother and a younger sister named Kim Hayeon, she aspired to become a singer from an early age. During middle school, she attended SM Academy to receive formal vocal instruction from singer The One, traveling every Sunday from her hometown to Seoul. In 2004, she was featured on The One's track "You Bring Me Joy," won first place at the SM Youth Best Competition, and signed a contract with SM Entertainment. After completing her training period, she graduated from Jeonju Art High School in 2008, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the institution.

Early in her career, Taeyeon established a strong presence through television drama soundtracks. Her early recordings included "If" for the drama Hong Gil-dong and "Can You Hear Me" for Beethoven Virus, both released in 2008. She made her theatrical acting debut in 2010 playing the lead role of Kaoru Amane in the musical A Song to the Sun. Over the following years, she continued to record successful soundtrack songs, including "Like A Star" with The One, "I Love You" for Athena: Goddess of War, "Missing You Like Crazy" for The King 2 Hearts, and "And One" for That Winter, the Wind Blows. She also recorded the theme song "Bye" for the film Mr. Go.

Taeyeon officially launched her career as a solo artist in October 2015 with the release of her debut extended play, I. The title track topped South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart, while the album reached the top of the Billboard World Albums chart. She followed this success with subsequent extended plays, including Why in 2016, the holiday-themed release This Christmas: Winter Is Coming in 2017, and Something New in 2018. During this period, she also released the chart-topping digital single "Rain" through the SM Station project and launched her solo concert series, performing across South Korea and embarking on her first Asian tour, Persona.

Her solo discography expanded to full-length studio albums starting with My Voice in 2017, which produced the hit singles "Fine", "11:11", and "Make Me Love You". She debuted in the Japanese music market in 2018 with the digital single "Stay", followed by her Japanese extended play Voice in 2019. Her second studio album, Purpose, was released in 2019 and featured the single "Four Seasons". In 2022, she released her third studio album, INVU, led by its titular main track along with singles such as "Weekend" and "Can't Control Myself".

In addition to her music career, Taeyeon has built a prominent television profile. She appeared on reality shows such as We Got Married in 2009 and Begin Again in 2019, hosted the competition series Queendom 2 in 2022, and joined Amazing Saturday as a regular cast member in 2020. Having accumulated over one million physical album sales and twenty million digital single sales by 2021, she stands among South Korea's highest-selling solo artists.
