About Sunny
Susan Soonkyu Lee, known professionally as Sunny, is a South Korean and American singer and entertainer based in South Korea. She is best known as a member of the girl group Girls' Generation and its subgroup Girls' Generation-Oh!GG. After making her official debut with the group in August 2007, she helped Girls' Generation become one of the best-selling musical acts in South Korea and one of the country's most widely recognized girl groups globally. Outside of her group commitments, Sunny has established a diverse career spanning soundtrack recordings, television variety programs, radio hosting, and musical theatre.
Sunny was born on May 15, 1989, in Orange County, California. She grew up with two older sisters who were born on the same day ten and fifteen years earlier. Influenced by her father, who performed in a college band, she developed an interest in singing. Her paternal uncle is Lee Soo-man, the founder of SM Entertainment. While she was an infant, her family relocated to Kuwait, but they returned to South Korea following the outbreak of the Gulf War and settled in Jongno-gu, Seoul. She attended Seoul Cheongun Elementary School, Paiwha Girls' Middle School, and Paiwha Girls' High School.
In 1998, Sunny joined SM Entertainment and trained for five years before moving to Starworld Agency, where her father worked as a manager. She was scheduled to debut in a musical duo named Sugar, but the group did not launch. In early 2007, singer Ayumi Lee encouraged Sunny to return to SM Entertainment. Following further training, she debuted with Girls' Generation in August 2007. The group achieved massive popularity after releasing their breakthrough single "Gee" in 2009.
Alongside her group activities, Sunny frequently contributed to television soundtracks and voice acting. In 2008, she recorded "You Don't Know About Love" for Working Mom, followed by "Finally Now" and "It's Love" in 2009. Her 2010 song "Your Doll" for Oh! My Lady became her first track to enter the Gaon Digital Chart. In 2012, she released duets including "I Love You, I Love You" with Miryo and "It's Me" with Luna, both of which charted on Gaon and Billboard's K-pop Hot 100. She also entered animated voice dubbing, voicing Miranda in The Outback in 2012 and Jewel in Rio 2 in 2014.
Sunny expanded into broadcasting, variety programming, and stage acting. She co-hosted radio shows such as Melon Chunji Radio in 2008 and hosted MBC's FM Date from 2014 to 2015, winning the Rookie Radio DJ Award at the MBC Entertainment Awards. Her television credits include co-hosting The M, Music Island, and Serial Shopping Family, alongside appearances on Invincible Youth, Invincible Youth 2, Roommate, Vocal War: God's Voice, and Cheonhajangsa. In musical theatre, she played Brenda in Catch Me If You Can in 2012—earning a Best New Actress nomination at the 6th Musical Awards—and Kathy Selden in Singin' in the Rain in 2014.
In August 2023, Sunny departed SM Entertainment after her contract expired. In April 2025, A2O Entertainment announced that Sunny had signed a contract, effective from 2024, to serve as a special trainer for the agency's trainees. The company was founded by her uncle, Lee Soo-man.
