Due to the high number of his projects distributed on the platform, he has been nicknamed the "Son of Netflix."

Song made his initial appearance under the agency Namoo Actors in December 2016. He debuted as an actor in 2017 with a supporting role in the romantic comedy series The Liar and His Lover, followed by a role in the family drama Man in the Kitchen. That year, he also featured in music videos for artists The Ade and Suran. In 2018, Song served as a co-host for the music show Inkigayo alongside Mingyu of Seventeen and Jung Chae-yeon of DIA, and joined the variety show Village Survival, the Eight as a regular member. His work on these programs led to a Rookie Award nomination at the 2018 SBS Entertainment Awards. He subsequently made his feature film debut in the fantasy movie Beautiful Vampire in July 2018.

In 2019, Song held a supporting role in the fantasy series When the Devil Calls Your Name and appeared in a music video for Vibe. Later that year, he earned his first lead role in the Netflix romance series Love Alarm after competing against 900 candidates during auditions. He portrayed a high school student named Hwang Sun-oh alongside co-star Kim So-hyun. The production became one of the streaming service's top releases of the year and returned for a second season in March 2021.

Song reached broader international recognition in 2020 by starring as Cha Hyun-su in the Netflix apocalyptic horror series Sweet Home, directed by Lee Eung-bok. The performance earned him a nomination for Best New Actor – Television at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards, and the show attracted 22 million member household views within a month. In 2021, Song took ballet lessons for six months to play a ballet student in the series Navillera, and starred opposite Han So-hee in the romantic drama Nevertheless. That year, Sweet Home, Love Alarm, and Nevertheless ranked fifth, sixth, and eighth respectively among the most-watched Korean dramas on Netflix worldwide.

Song continued his leading roles by starring alongside Park Min-young in Forecasting Love and Weather in 2022, and with Kim You-jung in My Demon in 2023. Beyond acting, he has represented several brands as an ambassador, including South Korean cosmetics brand Banila Co. in 2020, Italian fashion house Prada in 2021, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics in the Asia-Pacific region in 2022, and global clothing brand Penshoppe.

On February 29, 2024, Namoo Actors announced that Song would begin his mandatory military service as an active-duty soldier on April 2, 2024. He finished his service and was discharged on October 1, 2025.
