During his middle school years at Gyeongnam Middle School, he played on the basketball team for three years with aspirations of becoming a professional athlete. However, after sustaining an injury that required surgery, he had to give up the sport. Following a move to Seoul, he won the K-Plus-sponsored Top Model contest, which resulted in him signing an exclusive contract with the modeling agency.

He officially entered the entertainment industry as a model in 2013, debuting in the SONGZIO Homme 2014 Spring/Summer collection. In 2014, he appeared in the music videos for Akdong Musician's songs "200%" and "Give Love." Shortly after, he transitioned into acting with a supporting role in the tvN television series The Idle Mermaid.

Nam earned his first lead role in 2015 in the teen drama Who Are You: School 2015, playing high school swimmer Han Yi-an. His work in the show earned him accolades, including Best New Actor at the 4th APAN Star Awards and the Popularity Award at the 2015 KBS Drama Awards. In 2016, he appeared in supporting roles in Cheese in the Trap and Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, joined the variety program Three Meals a Day, and starred as swimmer Jung Joon-hyung in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo, securing broader public recognition.

He continued expanding his career with a lead role in tvN's fantasy romance series The Bride of Habaek in 2017. The following year, Nam made his feature film debut in the historical movie The Great Battle, which earned him the Best New Actor award at the Blue Dragon Awards. He later earned positive reviews for his performance in the 2019 series The Light In Your Eyes. In 2020, he starred in Netflix's supernatural drama The School Nurse Files, tvN's Start-Up, and the film Josée. His prominent television and film projects contributed to his placement on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list in 2021.

In 2022, Nam starred as Baek Yi-jin in the drama Twenty-Five Twenty-One and featured in the movie Remember. The following year, he portrayed a police student operating as a vigilante in the webtoon-based drama Vigilante. In January 2026, he signed an exclusive contract with Fable Company.

In addition to acting, Nam became a brand ambassador for Penshoppe in 2017 and Dior Men in Asia in 2019. He has also participated in charitable activities, donating ₩30 million for wildfire relief in 2019 and ₩50 million for COVID-19 medical supplies in 2020. Nam enlisted for his mandatory military service in March 2023, serving in the 32nd Division Military Police Unit after serving as a chief trainee. He completed his military duties in September 2024 and subsequently made an appearance at Paris Fashion Week.
