Liam Payne

Liam James Payne (29 August 1993 – 16 October 2024) was an English singer and songwriter. He gained global fame as a member of the pop band One Direction alongside Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson. One Direction became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, selling 70 million records worldwide and earning numerous accolades, including seven Brit Awards, seven American Music Awards, six Billboard Music Awards, and four MTV Video Music Awards.

Payne was born premature at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, England, to Karen and Geoff Payne. He grew up with two older sisters and dealt with childhood health issues involving a scarred kidney. As a youth, he participated in sports, joined the Wolverhampton & Bilston Athletics Club, took up boxing at age 12, and performed with the Pink Productions Theatre Company. He completed 11 GCSEs at St Peter's Collegiate School and later studied music technology at City of Wolverhampton College.

Payne first auditioned for the British television series The X Factor in 2008 at age 14, reaching the judges' houses stage. He returned to the show in 2010, where he was grouped with Styles, Horan, Tomlinson, and Malik to form One Direction. The group placed third and signed with Syco Entertainment in 2011. Between 2011 and 2015, One Direction released five studio albums: Up All Night, Take Me Home, Midnight Memories, Four, and Made in the A.M. Payne was a key co-writer for the band, contributing to over half the tracks on their third and fourth albums. Alongside his group work, he established the publishing company Hampton Music Limited and produced remixes under the pseudonyms Big Payno and Payno.

Following One Direction's 2016 hiatus, Payne signed with Republic Records to pursue a solo career. In 2017, he released his debut solo single "Strip That Down", which reached number three on the UK Singles Chart and number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100. He followed with notable collaborations, including "Get Low" with Zedd, "For You" with Rita Ora for the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack, "Familiar" with J Balvin, and "Polaroid" with Jonas Blue and Lennon Stella. He released his debut extended play, First Time, in 2018, followed by his debut solo studio album, LP1, in December 2019.

In addition to his music career, Payne served as the first global brand ambassador for Hugo Boss starting in 2019, releasing capsule collections and starring in fragrance campaigns. He was also involved in various philanthropic efforts, supporting organizations such as UNICEF, Comic Relief, Children in Need, CLIC Sargent, and Trekstock. Payne died on 16 October 2024 at the age of 31 after a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
