Zayn Malik

Zain Javadd Malik, known professionally as Zayn Malik or simply Zayn, is an English singer. Born on 12 January 1993 in Bradford, West Yorkshire, he was raised in East Bowling in a working-class family. His father is British Pakistani, and his mother is White British of English and Irish descent who converted to Islam upon marriage. He grew up with one older sister and two younger sisters, attending Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School in Bradford. As a teenager, he participated in performing arts courses, appeared in school productions, wrote raps, and boxed for two years.

In 2010, Malik auditioned for the seventh series of the British television music competition show The X Factor in Manchester, performing Mario's "Let Me Love You." Although eliminated before the final round of the bootcamp competition, judges Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell grouped him with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson to form the boy band One Direction. The group signed a recording contract with Syco Records and later signed with Columbia Records in North America.

One Direction achieved global commercial success, becoming one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. Their debut album, Up All Night (2011), made them the first UK group to have a debut album reach number one in the United States. They subsequently released Take Me Home in 2012, Midnight Memories in 2013, and Four in 2014, supported by extensive international concert tours and licensed books. In March 2015, during the Asian leg of the On The Road Again Tour, Malik departed from the group to pursue a normal life outside the spotlight and seek greater creative input.

Following his departure from One Direction, Malik signed a solo recording contract with RCA Records and adopted the mononym Zayn. He released his debut solo studio album, Mind of Mine, in March 2016. Moving toward an alternative R&B musical direction, the album and its lead single "Pillowtalk" both debuted at number one in the United Kingdom and the United States. This achievement made Malik the first British male solo artist to debut at number one in both countries with a debut single and debut album.

Following his debut, Malik released several successful collaborative singles, including "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" with Taylor Swift for the film Fifty Shades Darker and "Dusk Till Dawn" featuring Sia. He expanded his discography with subsequent studio albums, including Icarus Falls in 2018, Nobody Is Listening in 2021, Room Under the Stairs in 2024, and Konnakol in 2026. Beyond his music recording career, Malik published a self-titled autobiography in November 2016, worked across fashion, film, and television, and supported charitable causes.

Over the course of his career, Malik has earned several accolades, including an American Music Award and an MTV Video Music Award. Additionally, he became the only artist to win the Billboard Music Award for New Artist of the Year twice, receiving the honor first as a member of One Direction in 2013 and again as a solo artist in 2017.
