Ayelet Zurer

Ayelet Zurer is an Israeli film and television actress who began her career in Israeli productions before expanding into prominent Hollywood projects. Known for her performances in domestic dramas as well as major international feature films and series, she has earned significant acclaim throughout her career. Her achievements include a Best Actress honor at the Israeli Academy Awards along with multiple Best Actress accolades from the Israeli Television Academy.

Born on June 28, 1969, Zurer was raised in Tel Aviv within a Jewish family. Her mother was born in Czechoslovakia and survived the Holocaust by hiding in a convent before immigrating to Israel in the 1950s, while her Israeli-born father is of Russian Jewish heritage. Zurer studied theater at the 14th Municipal High School and participated in the Tel Aviv Scouts band. During her service in the Israel Defense Forces, she performed with the military band of the Northern Command. She subsequently spent three years studying acting at the Yoram Loewenstein Performing Arts Studio, followed by studies under George Morison at the Actor's Workshop in New York City, before returning to Israel in 1991.

Zurer made her early television breakthrough on the Israeli teen drama Inyan Shel Zman in the early 1990s. In 1993, she featured in the comedy movie Nikmato shel Itzik Finkelstein and took part in the cable show Yetziat Hirum. From 1997 to 2000, she starred as Shira Steinberg on the series Florentine, where her character shared the first lesbian kiss on Israeli television alongside Ronit Elkabetz in 2000. During this period, she also played the lead role in the 1998 feature Ahava Asura, also known as The Dybbuk of the Holy Apple Field, and appeared in the series Zinzana in 2000.

Throughout the 2000s, Zurer expanded her filmography with roles in films such as Laila Lelo Lola and Kikar Ha'Halomot, as well as the series Shalva and Ha'Block. She won an Israeli Academy Award for Best Actress for her title performance in the 2003 film Nina's Tragedies. In 2005, she starred as Na'ama Lerner in the television drama Betipul, winning a Best Actress award from the Israeli Television Academy for a series later remade as HBO's In Treatment. She subsequently entered American cinema, appearing as Avner Kaufman's wife in Steven Spielberg's Munich in 2005, followed by roles in Fugitive Pieces, Vantage Point, Adam Resurrected, and as scientist Vittoria Vetra in Angels & Demons.

In subsequent years, Zurer took on major international and domestic roles, including the lead in Hide Away, Superman's mother Lara Lor-Van in Man of Steel, and Elisheva Rotstein in the series Shtisel. She earned another Israeli Television Academy award for her role in Hostages, and portrayed Vanessa Marianna-Fisk in Marvel's Daredevil, a role she reprised in Daredevil: Born Again. Additional projects include Ben-Hur, You, Losing Alice, and the Israeli drama series The Best Worst Thing. Zurer married surfing instructor Gilad Londovski in 2003; the couple has one son and resides in Los Angeles.
