Actor Cameron Monaghan has made his return to live theater, taking on the lead role of Garrett Stern in the New Group’s Off-Broadway revival of Gordon Greenberg’s Rope. Adapted from Patrick Hamilton’s 1929 stage play—which inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s 1948 psychological thriller—the production explores a dark narrative centered on two brilliant, bored intellectual partners who execute a murder before hosting a dinner party around their victim's hidden remains.
For Monaghan, the starring role represents a milestone in a deliberate transition toward live stage drama. Following his decade-long portrayal of Ian Gallagher on Showtime’s hit series Shameless, the actor pursued classical theater training in Los Angeles and completed coursework in Shakespearean performance at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Monaghan made his initial return to the New York stage last year with a short run in Clifford Odets’s The Nursery at The Flea Theater before signing on to lead Greenberg's new adaptation.
In addition to his stage production, Monaghan is expanding his audio projects this month. He joined actor Titus Welliver to co-narrate Michael Connelly’s new Harry Bosch audiobook, The Hollow. The narration collaboration builds anticipation ahead of Monaghan stepping into the role of a young LAPD detective in the upcoming prequel television series Bosch: Start of Watch, depicting the character's early years on the force alongside co-star Omari Hardwick.
Monaghan’s career spans television, film, and interactive media. Beyond his landmark eleven-season run on Shameless and his dual role as the Valeska twins on FOX’s Gotham, he is widely recognized as the voice and motion-capture actor behind Jedi Knight Cal Kestis in Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts' Star Wars Jedi video game franchise. His current Off-Broadway run in Rope continues as he balances stage acting with major upcoming screen projects.
