Chris Campanioni

Chris Campanioni is an American model, author, poet, and academic known for his work in commercial and high-fashion modeling alongside an extensive career in literature and media studies. Gaining early prominence in the fashion industry, he subsequently integrated his firsthand experiences in modeling with critical theory, creative writing, and autoethnographic research.

About and Early Life

Born on April 17, 1985, in Manhattan, New York, Chris Campanioni grew up in New Jersey as a first-generation American born to immigrant parents from Cuba and Poland. He pursued higher education in English literature and critical theory, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Lehigh University and a Master of Arts from Fordham University. He later completed his doctorate in English at the CUNY Graduate Center in 2022, specializing in media studies, migration, and digital culture.

Modeling and Media Career

Campanioni began his professional career working as a fashion model, actor, and news journalist, appearing in print campaigns, runway shows, and editorial spreads, including modeling for brands such as C-IN2. His direct involvement in the fashion industry inspired much of his creative and critical direction. He frequently used his platform to address fashion industry standards, media representation, and cultural identity, most notably in his award-winning poem "Billboards," which examined Latino stereotypes and body identity in fashion advertising.

Writing and Academic Achievements

Beyond modeling, Campanioni has built a prolific literary career as an author, editor, and university professor. His debut novel, Going Down (2013), won Best Debut Novel at the International Latino Book Awards. His subsequent literary publications include Tourist Trap, Death of Art, the internet is for real, A and B and Also Nothing, Windows 85, and VHS. His writing and interdisciplinary research have earned multiple honors, including the Pushcart Prize, the Calder Prize, and the Academy of American Poets College Prize. In addition to his published works, he has served as an editor for literary journals such as PANK and has taught creative writing and media studies at Pace University, Baruch College, and John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
