Terrell Owens

Terrell Eldorado Owens, also known by his initials T. O., is an American former professional football wide receiver who played 15 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). Owens ranks third in NFL career receiving yards and receiving touchdowns and is regarded as one of the greatest wide receivers of all time. Selected in the third round of the 1996 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers, he spent seven seasons with the team before playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills, and Cincinnati Bengals. He later played for the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League in 2012 and Fan Controlled Football in 2022.

Owens was born on December 7, 1973, in Alexander City, Alabama, to Marilyn Heard and L.C. Russell. He grew up with three siblings and was raised by his mother and grandmother. At 10 years old, Owens discovered his father's identity after liking his father's daughter, only to learn she was his sister. His grandmother initially forbade him from playing sports until high school. At Benjamin Russell High School, he participated in football, baseball, track, and basketball, earning a starting position on the football team during his junior year.

While attending the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Owens competed in basketball, track, and football. He played in the 1995 NCAA basketball tournament and became a starting wide receiver during his sophomore year, recording 38 receptions for 724 yards and eight touchdowns. As a junior, he caught 34 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns. Faced with frequent double coverage as a senior, he posted 43 receptions for 667 yards and one touchdown. He held Chattanooga's single-season receptions record until 2007, anchored the school's 4 × 100 relay team at the NCAA championship, and participated in the Senior Bowl.

The 49ers selected Owens with the 89th overall pick in 1996. After stepping into the starting lineup for an injured Jerry Rice in 1997, Owens helped San Francisco win 13 games. He recorded his first 1,000-yard season in 1998, which included a game-winning postseason touchdown catch against the Green Bay Packers. On December 17, 2000, Owens set a single-game record with 20 receptions for 283 yards against the Chicago Bears. He posted multiple 1,000-yard receiving seasons with San Francisco through 2003.

Following a contractual dispute and trade settlement, Owens signed a seven-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004. Despite suffering a fractured fibula and severe ankle sprain in December, he returned to play in Super Bowl XXXIX, recording nine catches for 122 yards. However, contract renegotiation demands and public friction with quarterback Donovan McNabb and team leadership led to Owens being suspended for conduct detrimental to the team during the 2005 season. The Eagles released him in March 2006.

Owens signed a three-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys in March 2006. In his debut season with Dallas, he overcame a broken finger sustained during a game to return to play. Over the course of his career, Owens was named to six Pro Bowls and selected as a first-team All-Pro five times. Recognized for his flamboyant touchdown celebrations alongside his on-field achievements, Owens was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
