Nora Aunor

Nora Cabaltera Villamayor (May 21, 1953 – April 16, 2025), professionally known as Nora Aunor, was a celebrated Filipino actress, singer, and film producer. Renowned for her work in projects featuring patriotic, feminist, and socio-political themes, she appeared in over 170 feature films during a career spanning more than fifty years. Honored as a National Artist of the Philippines for Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022, she was widely recognized as the most awarded actress in Philippine cinema history and was popularly dubbed the country's "Superstar."

Born in Iriga, Camarines Sur, to Antonia Cabaltera and Eustacio Villamayor, she was raised in a large family with nine siblings, including actor Eddie Villamayor. Facing severe financial hardship during her youth, she sold water and peanuts to support her family. Her musical background was fostered by her grandmother Theresa, who taught her to sing, and her aunt Belén Aunor, who helped refine her vocal delivery and provided her artistic name. After winning local radio competitions, she achieved national fame by winning the televised singing contest Tawag ng Tanghalan on May 29, 1967. She completed her secondary education at Generosa de Leon Memorial College after attending Mabini Memorial College and Nichols Air Base Elementary School.

Following her singing contest victory, she launched her entertainment career with live guest performances and television appearances. She secured a film contract with Sampaguita Pictures in 1967, featuring in youth-oriented movies while releasing music singles. In 1969, she landed her first leading role in D' Musical Teenage Idols opposite Tirso Cruz III, establishing a highly successful screen partnership known as "Guy and Pip." Their 1971 film became a massive box-office success. Around this period, she also launched her musical variety show Superstar, which remained on prime-time Philippine television for 22 years.

In the early 1970s, she transitioned from a teen idol into a serious dramatic performer, earning her first major acting accolades for And God Smiled at Me (1972). She founded her own production outfit, NV Productions, in 1973, producing and starring in notable titles such as Carmela, Banaue: Stairway to the Sky, and Alkitrang Dugo. Her critical acclaim grew significantly with lead roles in historic and socially relevant dramas like Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos (1976), Minsa'y Isang Gamu-gamo (1976), and Ina Ka ng Anak Mo (1979).

Throughout the 1980s, she continued to work with prominent directors on impactful films. She produced and starred in Lino Brocka's Bona (1980), which gained international exposure at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1982, she portrayed a central role in Ishmael Bernal's acclaimed drama Himala, which garnered international festival recognition. Her dramatic career extended into later decades with internationally screened features including The Flor Contemplacion Story (1995), Bakit May Kahapon Pa? (1996), Thy Womb (2012), Dementia (2014), Hustisya, and Taklub.

Over her long career, she accumulated extensive recognition from major award bodies. She received multiple Best Actress honors from the FAMAS Awards, where she was inducted into the Hall of Fame, as well as numerous trophies from the Gawad Urian Awards, PMPC Star Awards, Metro Manila Film Festival, Luna Awards, and Young Critics Circle Awards. Internationally, she won awards at the Cairo International Film Festival, Asia Pacific Screen Awards, and Asian Film Awards, where she was the first Filipino to win Best Actress.
