Julia Michaels

Julia Carin Michaels is an American singer and songwriter who achieved commercial success both as a solo recording artist and as a prominent pop songwriter. She has received six Grammy Award nominations, including nods for Best New Artist and twice for Song of the Year, alongside nominations from the MTV Video Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and American Music Awards.

Michaels was born in Davenport, Iowa, and raised in Santa Clarita, California. Her father, who is of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent, changed his name from Juan Manuel Cavazos to John Michaels to pursue an acting career, and her older sister Jaden is also a songwriter. Michaels began singing at age 12 and cited musical inspirations such as Fiona Apple, Paramore, and Laura Marling. She began writing in Hollywood pop circuits at age 16, co-writing the theme song to the Disney Channel series Austin & Ally at 17, and later collaborating with songwriters Joleen Belle, Lindy Robbins, and Justin Tranter.

After performing background vocals for the song "Let It Go" from Frozen in 2012 and performing "Carry Me" with Kygo at the 2016 Summer Olympics closing ceremony, Michaels signed with Republic Records. In January 2017, she released her debut solo single, "Issues," which peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned a quintuple platinum certification from the RIAA. She subsequently released her EP Nervous System in 2017 and served as an opening act for Shawn Mendes's Illuminate World Tour. In 2018, she contributed music to the films Fifty Shades Freed and Ralph Breaks the Internet, opened tours for Niall Horan and Maroon 5, and released the EP Inner Monologue Part 1 in early 2019.

After appearing on the television series Songland in 2020, Michaels released her debut studio album, Not in Chronological Order, in April 2021 to critical praise. In 2023, she co-wrote songs for the Disney animated film Wish and was featured on NF's track "Gone." In August 2024, she confirmed her status as an independent artist, and in 2025, she launched her own independent label, GFY Records, to release her music.

Throughout her songwriting career, Michaels has earned credits on tracks for major performers including Selena Gomez, Olivia Rodrigo, Demi Lovato, Ed Sheeran, Fifth Harmony, Shawn Mendes, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, Gwen Stefani, Sabrina Carpenter, and Tate McRae. She co-wrote two Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles: Bieber's "Sorry" and Gomez's "Lose You to Love Me." As a featured artist, she has appeared on singles such as Clean Bandit's "I Miss You," Keith Urban's "Coming Home," Josh Ross's "Want This Beer," and JP Saxe's "If the World Was Ending."

Michaels was previously in relationships with record producer Sir Nolan, artist Lauv, and musician JP Saxe. In July 2022, she began dating tattoo artist Mat Rule, and the couple announced their engagement in April 2025.
