John Leguizamo

John Alberto Leguizamo Peláez is a Colombian and American actor, comedian, and filmmaker. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, he is widely recognized for his accomplishments across stand-up comedy, stage productions, feature films, and television series. Over a career spanning several decades, he has earned major accolades including a Primetime Emmy Award and a Special Tony Award, alongside nominations for a Golden Globe Award, an Actor Award, and a Critics' Choice Award.

Leguizamo spent his childhood in Queens, New York, after his family emigrated from Colombia. He attended local public institutions, including Murry Bergtraum High School, where he began writing and testing comedy routines on his classmates. Although he later enrolled in the theater program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, he dropped out to focus on a stand-up comedy career. He subsequently continued his acting education by taking theater classes at LIU Post and HB Studio.

His professional performance career started in the mid-1980s with stand-up routines in New York nightclubs, followed by early television roles in programs such as Miami Vice. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he secured minor film appearances in Casualties of War, Die Hard 2, and Regarding Henry. He gained significant critical recognition by writing and starring in the 1991 Off-Broadway production Mambo Mouth. Leguizamo achieved his mainstream film breakthrough in 1993 portraying Luigi Mario in Super Mario Bros., which was followed by a prominent role in Carlito's Way.

Throughout the 1990s and continuing into subsequent decades, Leguizamo built a varied cinematic career. He earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, and appeared in notable features such as Romeo + Juliet, Summer of Sam, Moulin Rouge!, Chef, and the John Wick series. He also established a successful voice acting career, most prominently voicing Sid the Sloth across the Ice Age film franchise, as well as Bruno Madrigal in Encanto.

Beyond feature films, Leguizamo has maintained an extensive presence on television and the Broadway stage. He created and starred in the variety program House of Buggin' and appeared in series such as ER, Waco, and When They See Us, while hosting non-fiction projects including Leguizamo Does America. As a stage writer and performer, he received multiple Tony Award nominations for his solo Broadway productions, including Freak, Sexaholix, and Latin History for Morons, as well as an Emmy Award for the filmed adaptation of Freak.
