Guetta was born and raised in Paris. His father, Pierre, was a sociologist born into a Moroccan Jewish family, and his mother, Monique, was of Belgian descent. He is the younger half-brother of journalist Bernard Guetta, actress Nathalie Guetta, Dominique Vidal, and Joëlle Vidal. Guetta began his music career as a nightclub disc jockey in Paris while reading economics and social policy at Paris Nanterre University.
After discovering house music in 1987, Guetta began hosting club nights and playing across Parisian venues. In 1994, he released the minor hit "Up & Away" with Robert Owens and became manager of Le Palace nightclub. Guetta co-founded Gum Productions with Joachim Garraud in 2001, releasing his hit single "Just a Little More Love" featuring Chris Willis. His debut album, Just a Little More Love, followed in 2002 and sold over 300,000 copies.
Guetta released his second album, Guetta Blaster, in 2004, and his third, Pop Life, in 2007. Pop Life sold 530,000 copies worldwide and featured "Love Is Gone", which topped the American Dance Chart. In 2008, Guetta and his wife Cathy staged the "UNIGHTED" event at Stade de France for an audience of 40,000. He also launched a radio show broadcast on RauteMusik and Radio 538.
Guetta achieved international breakthrough success with his 2009 album One Love, which generated hits such as "When Love Takes Over", "Sexy Bitch", and "Memories". Around this time, he produced The Black Eyed Peas' hit single "I Gotta Feeling" and worked with artists like Kelly Rowland, Kelis, and Flo Rida. His 2011 album, Nothing but the Beat, brought further success with tracks like "Where Them Girls At", "Without You", "Titanium", and "Turn Me On".
In 2012, Guetta created Jack Back Records to release electronic music. He subsequently contributed production to projects for Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears. His 2018 album 7 included tracks under his Jack Back alias. In 2019, Guetta and Morten Breum created the "future rave" subgenre, releasing the EP New Rave in 2020. His 2022 single "I'm Good (Blue)" with Bebe Rexha became the third longest-running chart-topping song on the US Dance/Electronic chart. In June 2021, Guetta sold his recorded music catalogue for between US$100 million and US$150 million.
