Antonio Berardi

Antonio Berardi is a British fashion designer of Sicilian descent who is best known for his dress designs. He presents his clothing collections at London Fashion Week, having previously shown his work in both Milan and Paris.

Berardi was born in 1968 in Grantham, Lincolnshire, to Sicilian parents who had emigrated to Britain during the 1950s. He developed an interest in fashion during his childhood, saving money at age nine to buy Armani shirts featuring leather gusset shoulders. Following his secondary school education, he pursued a design career by attending Lincoln College of Art and Design, after which he worked as an assistant to John Galliano. In 1990, on his third application, he gained admission to Central Saint Martins to study under Wendy Dagworthy.

Berardi's design style is recognized for its striking, classical, and dressed-up aesthetic, frequently utilizing advanced fabrics, specialized manufacturing techniques, and sensual, figure-hugging dress silhouettes. His creative influences draw from a wide range of sources, including music, independent film, post-modern art, Catholic symbolism, Italian art and culture, urban street style, lingerie, and the female form.

Throughout his career, Berardi has created several notable pieces that highlighted his unique design concepts. During a 2003 presentation in Milan, he showcased a coat embedded with light bulbs that illuminated to depict a crucifix. He also designed a trompe-l'œil corset black-and-white dress featuring lace detailing, which was worn by actress Gwyneth Paltrow in November 2008 at the premiere of the film Two Lovers. This particular garment received major industry recognition when Harper's Bazaar magazine named it the Dress of the Year for 2009.
