About Sia
Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, born on 18 December 1975 in Adelaide, South Australia, is an Australian singer and songwriter. She was raised in Adelaide by her mother, Loene Furler, an art lecturer, and her father, Phil Colson, a guitarist. She is also the niece of actor Kevin Colson. As a child, she imitated artists such as Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Sting. At age 12, while staying in New York City with family friend Colin Hay, watching him attend the Grammy Awards inspired her to pursue a music career. She attended Adelaide High School.
Sia began her musical career in the mid-1990s as a singer for the local acid jazz band Crisp, contributing vocals to their album Word and the Deal and EP Delirium. Following Crisp's disbandment in 1997, she released her debut studio album, OnlySee, in Australia under her full name, Sia Furler. Moving to London, she performed as a background vocalist for Jamiroquai and provided vocals for the English downtempo group Zero 7 across several studio albums, contributing to tracks such as Destiny, Somersault, and Speed Dial No. 2.
In 2000, Sia signed with Sony Music's sub-label DancePool and released the single Taken for Granted, which reached the top ten on the UK Singles Chart. Her second solo album, Healing Is Difficult, was released in 2001, followed by Colour the Small One in 2004, which included the single Breathe Me. After relocating to New York City in 2005, her profile grew when Breathe Me was featured in the television series Six Feet Under. Sia released her fourth studio album, Some People Have Real Problems, in 2008, and her fifth, We Are Born, in 2010. Both albums were certified gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association.
Uncomfortable with her growing fame, Sia took a break from performing to focus on writing songs for other artists. Between 2011 and 2013, she co-wrote several hit tracks, including Titanium with David Guetta, Diamonds for Rihanna, Wild Ones with Flo Rida, and Pretty Hurts for Beyoncé. She also co-wrote songs for Christina Aguilera's album Bionic and the Golden Globe-nominated track Bound to You from the film Burlesque.
Sia returned to her solo recording career with her sixth studio album, 1000 Forms of Fear, released in July 2014. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and yielded the top-ten single Chandelier. To maintain her privacy and avoid celebrity scrutiny, Sia began wearing a wig in public that obscured her face. In music videos and live promotional performances for the album, child dancer Maddie Ziegler often performed as a proxy for Sia.
Her seventh studio album, This Is Acting (2016), produced the Billboard Hot 100 number-one single Cheap Thrills. That year, she launched the Nostalgic for the Present Tour, which integrated dance and performance art elements. She later released the holiday album Everyday Is Christmas (2017), formed the group LSD with Diplo and Labrinth to release a collaborative album in 2019, and released her tenth album, Reasonable Woman, in 2024. In addition to her music, Sia is an advocate for animal rights. She made her feature film directorial debut with Music (2021) and wrote its soundtrack album. Her accolades include ten ARIA Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, and nine Grammy Award nominations.
