He is widely recognized for his leading roles in major television projects such as Good Manager, Hot Stove League, and My Dearest, which have earned him several of South Korea's highest acting accolades.

Born on March 12, 1978, in Seoul, Namkoong grew up with his brother, Namkoong Yoon. His father, Namkoong Hwon, served as a middle school principal between 2005 and 2009. Namkoong completed his early education at Ilsan Seongsa Elementary School and Daeseong High School before attending Chung-Ang University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Following his graduation in August 2006, he completed 18 months of mandatory service as a social service agent at the military training facility in Nonsan.

Namkoong made his acting debut with supporting roles in the films Bungee Jumping of Their Own and Bad Guy. His appearance in the 2002 sitcom Dae Bak Family brought him increased public interest, and his physical similarity to a prominent actor earned him the nickname "little Bae Yong-joon." He subsequently appeared in single-act pieces and series such as Rose Fence, Pearl Necklace, Mould Flower, and After Love. In 2004, he secured wider visibility through the daily series My Lovely Family, which achieved television ratings above 30 percent.

Critical recognition followed his performance in the 2006 neo-noir film A Dirty Carnival, after which he gained further audience notice in the 2011 melodrama Listen to My Heart. In 2015, Namkoong demonstrated his range by portraying a serial killer in A Girl Who Sees Smells, winning the Best Villain honor at the 2016 DramaFever Awards. He continued to build momentum with major roles in the legal thriller Remember: War of the Son and the romantic comedy Beautiful Gong Shim.

Namkoong achieved a major career breakthrough in 2017 as the lead character in the hit workplace comedy Good Manager, followed by a starring role as a tabloid journalist in Distorted. He then appeared in the 2018 romantic comedy The Undateables alongside former co-star Hwang Jung-eum and starred in the 2019 medical drama Doctor Prisoner. From 2019 to 2020, he headlined the sports series Hot Stove League as the new leader of a struggling baseball team. The show earned the Best Drama award at the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards, while Namkoong received his third Baeksang Best Actor nomination and his first Grand Prize at the SBS Drama Awards.

Namkoong maintained his success by winning back-to-back Grand Prizes at the MBC Drama Awards for his starring roles in The Veil in 2021 and My Dearest in 2023. Beyond acting, he wrote and directed the film Light My Fire, through which he met model Jin Ah-reum in late 2015. The couple married on October 7, 2022, at Hotel Shilla in Seoul, in a ceremony hosted by actor Jung Moon-sung with music by TVXQ. They announced they were expecting their first child in June 2026 and welcomed a son the following month. Namkoong renewed his contract with 935 Entertainment for a third time in September 2021 and became the official brand model for the fashion store WELLMADE in February 2023.
