Yamamoto was born in Japan on February 4, 1986. In 1991, her family relocated to London, where they resided until returning to Tokyo in 1994 when she was eight years old. Living abroad gave her a distinct perspective on her cultural identity, as she felt perceived as fully Japanese abroad while simultaneously feeling somewhat distinct from peers within Japan. She went on to attend International Christian University in Tokyo, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations.
Following her university education, Yamamoto moved to New York City to pursue theatrical training at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, focusing on method acting. During her period living in New York, she also gained performing experience as a member of The Bats, an acting company affiliated with The Flea Theater.
Yamamoto eventually returned to Tokyo to launch a career in journalism. She authored articles for The Daily Beast, collaborating with American journalist Jake Adelstein. When Adelstein's non-fiction book Tokyo Vice was optioned for a television adaptation by HBO Max, Yamamoto joined the production's writing staff. Her role on the series expanded during its second season, when she advanced to serve as a producer.
Alongside her work behind the camera, Yamamoto established herself as a screen actor. In 2022, she gained wide visibility by securing the recurring role of Hana in the Apple TV+ drama series Pachinko. That same year, she joined the cast of the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Yamamoto has continued to expand her acting filmography with high-profile projects. In March 2024, she was selected to star opposite Brendan Fraser in the drama film Rental Family.
