About Chris Daughtry
Christopher Adam Daughtry, born December 26, 1979, is an American singer, songwriter, musician, actor, and comic book artist. He is best known as the lead vocalist and a guitarist for the rock band Daughtry, which he formed after placing fourth on the fifth season of the television series American Idol in 2006. Recognized for his powerful vocal belting technique and wide vocal range, he established himself as one of the most successful recording artists to emerge from the American Idol franchise.
Daughtry was born in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, to Sandra and James "Pete" Daughtry. He was raised in Lasker, North Carolina, until age 14 before his family moved to Palmyra, Virginia. He attended Fluvanna County High School, graduating in 1998, and participated in school stage productions of The Wiz and Peter Pan. He began taking singing seriously at age 16 and took guitar lessons from Matt Jagger and Mark Ebert. Prior to his national television debut, he performed with high school bands, including Cadence, which released the album All Eyes on You in 1999, and Absent Element, which released Uprooted in 2005.
In 2006, Daughtry auditioned for American Idol in Denver, Colorado. Throughout the fifth season, he delivered notable rock performances featuring songs by artists such as Fuel, Johnny Cash, and Live. He advanced to the top four before being eliminated on May 10, 2006. Following his exit, he made appearances on major national talk shows and declined an offer to audition as the lead singer for the band Fuel, choosing instead to assemble his own group.
After signing with 19 Entertainment and RCA Records, Daughtry formed his self-titled band. Released on November 21, 2006, the self-titled debut album was recorded before the band was officially formed, making Chris Daughtry the only official member present on the recording. The album reached number one on the Billboard chart and became the fastest-selling debut rock album in Nielsen SoundScan history. Its lead single, "It's Not Over," earned Grammy nominations, while the track "Home" was featured as the knockout song on American Idol and used during the 2007 NBA Playoffs.
The band released several subsequent studio albums, including Leave This Town (2009), Break the Spell (2011), Baptized (2013), Cage to Rattle (2018), and Dearly Beloved (2021). With Leave This Town, Daughtry became the first American Idol alumnus to achieve two consecutive number-one albums. Over the course of his career, he has collaborated with artists including Slash, Sevendust, Theory of a Deadman, Chad Kroeger, Brad Arnold, Vince Gill, Carlos Santana, and Timbaland. Outside of band recordings, he contributed the song "Drown In You" to the Batman: Arkham City video game soundtrack and placed as the runner-up on the second season of The Masked Singer in 2019 performing as "Rottweiler."
In August 2023, Daughtry signed with Big Machine Label Group and released the single "Artificial," which reached number one on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay chart in February 2024. Transitioning away from the softer sound requested during his time with RCA Records, Daughtry began working on a harder-sounding record aligned with the group's preferred artistic vision.
