About Bastian Baker
Bastien Kaltenbacher, professionally known as Bastian Baker, is a Swiss singer-songwriter. He was born on May 20, 1991, in Lausanne, Switzerland, to Bruno Kaltenbacher, a professional ice hockey player, and Magali, a school teacher. Baker grew up with two sisters, Margaux and Marine, the latter of whom also pursued a music career under the name MARYNE.
Initially aiming to follow in his father's footsteps, Baker sought a career in professional ice hockey. He played for the Swiss National League Juniors Elite A side Lausanne 4 Clubs under his birth name. Alongside his athletic pursuits, he developed an interest in music, joined a school choir in Villeneuve, and performed solo roles.
Baker's musical career began to take off after a friend's father saw him perform during a social gathering in 2010 and offered to produce his music. His debut single, "Lucky," produced by Richard Meyer (also known as Swayd), was released in March 2011 and successfully charted on the Swiss Singles Chart. Following this release, he performed at the Caprices Festival in April 2011 and the Montreux Jazz Festival in July 2011.
On September 9, 2011, Baker released his debut album, "Tomorrow May Not Be Better." The album reached number three on the Swiss album charts and reached the top spot on the Romandie Charts. The success led to an invitation to perform on the French television show "Taratata." In April 2012, "Tomorrow May Not Be Better" was released in France, where the single "Lucky" also achieved success.
Baker's achievements earned him recognition in 2012, when he won the "Best Breaking Act" award at Prix Walo, the official French-language Swiss Music Awards. Later that year, from October to November 2012, he competed in the third season of the television show "Danse avec les stars." Partnered with Katrina Patchett, he placed seventh out of ten participants.
Baker expanded his international presence in 2018 by serving as the opening act for every date of Shania Twain's Now Tour. During Twain's performances on the tour, he also joined her on stage to perform the song "Party for Two."
Returning briefly to athletics alongside his music career, Baker officially signed a one-year contract with HCV Martigny, a third-tier ice hockey team in the MySports League, on August 20, 2020.
