Yeri was born on March 5, 1999, in Seoul, South Korea, where she grew up alongside three younger sisters: Yoo-rim, Ye-eun, and Chae-eun. She graduated from Hanlim Multi Art School in 2018. She entered the entertainment industry after auditioning at the SM Weekly Audition in 2011 and joining SM Entertainment. Before her official debut, she performed with SM Entertainment's pre-debut training team, SM Rookies, at the SM Town Live World Tour IV in 2014 and briefly appeared in the introduction of Red Velvet's debut song "Happiness."

Yeri officially joined Red Velvet on March 10, 2015, during promotions for their first extended play, Ice Cream Cake. That same year, she co-hosted MBC's Show! In June 2020, Yeri launched her own reality-variety show, Yeri's Room, on the Dum Dum Studio YouTube channel.

In addition to her work with Red Velvet, Yeri has pursued various musical collaborations and solo projects. She co-wrote the lead single "Story" for singer Ragoon's 2017 EP Talking and released her first self-composed solo project, "Dear Diary," in March 2019 through SM Station Season 3.
