Brady was born on 28 March 1961, one of four children to Catherine and Patrick Brady, who at one point owned the Oak Bar in Dublin. She spent her early years in Bray, County Wicklow, until age seven, and attended an Ursuline convent school in Cabinteely. In 1986, she moved to Paris to pursue performance training, studying at the École Philippe Gaulier and gaining admittance to Marcel Marceau's mime school, where she developed her performance style through clowning and movement exercises.
Her acting career began on stage with the Balloonatics Theatre Company, touring in productions such as Hamlet and Finnegans Wake. Following her studies in France, she performed in Dublin at the Gate Theatre in productions of The House of Bernarda Alba and Three Sisters. She later relocated to London, appearing in the West End production of Philadelphia, Here I Come! and starring in Blinded by the Sun at the Royal National Theatre. In 2019, she won the Abbey Theatre Award for her role in On Broken Wings.
In the 1990s, Brady transitioned into regular television roles. After moving to California in 2001, she joined the cast of the legal drama Family Law and appeared in American shows such as Nip/Tuck, Shark, and Fringe. Her British and international television credits include Mistresses, Wallander, Hustle, Strike Back, The Deep, Eternal Law, Sinbad, Doctor Who, Banished, American Odyssey, and Into the Badlands. In subsequent years, she appeared in American Horror Story: 1984, Star Trek: Picard, and Bosch: Legacy.
Brady’s film career includes her award-winning portrayal of Sheila Cloney in A Love Divided. Her feature film credits also comprise The Luzhin Defence, Silent Grace, The Price of Desire, The Foreigner, Rose Plays Julie, and Freud’s Last Session.
During the 1980s, Brady worked as a model for an artists' reference manual.
