About Nick Mohammed
Nicholas George Mohammed is a British actor, writer, and comedian who achieved widespread international recognition for his portrayal of Nathan "Nate" Shelley in the comedy series Ted Lasso. Within the United Kingdom, he is also well known for creating and performing as the comedic stage and screen character Mr. Swallow, as well as for creating, writing, and starring in the series Intelligence.
Mohammed was raised in Leeds, England, by a general practitioner mother born in Cyprus and a legal professional father from Trinidad. He attended Abbey Grange High School before choosing to study for a geophysics degree at Durham University's St Aidan's College instead of taking an offer from Cambridge. At Durham, he played violin in the university orchestra and performed on the local comedy circuit after two unsuccessful auditions for the student revue. After earning his degree in 2003, he began doctoral studies in seismology at Cambridge University's Bullard Laboratories and Magdalene College, but he dropped out to pursue comedy and successfully joined the Cambridge Footlights.
From ages sixteen to thirty, Mohammed worked as a close-up magician for weddings and hotels. During his time with the Cambridge Footlights, he created Mr. Swallow, a megalomaniac magician whose high-pitched Northern voice was inspired by his secondary school English teacher. On radio and television, he wrote and starred in several BBC Radio 4 shows, including Quarters, Nick Mohammed in Bits, and Detective Sergeant Nick Mohammed. He was a cast member on the sketch series Sorry, I've Got No Head, co-hosted The King Is Dead, and took roles in shows such as Reggie Perrin, Drifters, Hank Zipzer, and The Job Lot.
Mohammed's career expanded into major feature projects when he voiced Piglet in the Disney film Christopher Robin and co-created the comedy show Intelligence alongside David Schwimmer. His performance in Ted Lasso from 2020 to 2023 brought him global prominence, earning him two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for supporting actor in a comedy series as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the ensemble cast. His film roles also include the comedy-drama Maggie Moore(s) and the action comedy Deep Cover.
Alongside his screen acting, Mohammed has maintained a prolific presence in live theater and television. He created and starred in the West End holiday show A Christmas Carol(ish) featuring Mr. Swallow, a character he also took on tour across the United Kingdom in the show Show Pony. His other television credits include competing on Taskmaster, joining the fifth season of Slow Horses, appearing on the Big Fat Quiz of the Year, and participating in the first season of The Celebrity Traitors.
In his personal life, Mohammed married his wife, Becca, in 2014 after meeting her during his university years at Durham, and the couple has three children. He resided in Richmond, London, for nearly ten years. Among his professional recognition, Durham University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Letters in 2026, the same year he hosted the Laurence Olivier Awards at the Royal Albert Hall.
