Lenny Henry

Sir Lenworth George Henry is a British comedian, actor, writer, and presenter who rose to prominence in the late 1970s and 1980s. Known initially for his stand-up comedy and impressions, he became one of the most prominent Black performers in British television during that era. His comedic material frequently celebrated and satirized his African-Caribbean heritage.

Born on August 29, 1958, in Dudley, Henry was the fifth of seven children and the first of his family born in the United Kingdom to Jamaican immigrant parents. He attended local schools in Dudley, including St John's Primary School and The Blue Coat School, before completing his education at W. R. Tuson College in Lancashire. When he was ten years old, he began spending time with the man later revealed as his biological father, who was also a Jamaican immigrant.

Henry began his career performing impressions in working men's clubs. In 1975, at age sixteen, he gained widespread national attention by winning the television talent competition New Faces. This success led to a management contract and performances in touring stage productions, as well as an appearance in the 1976 sitcom The Fosters, which featured a predominantly Black cast. He subsequently joined the children's show Tiswas and co-wrote and performed in the sketch series Three of a Kind.

In the early 1980s, Henry transitioned into the alternative comedy scene after collaborating with The Comic Strip collective and marrying comedian Dawn French in 1984. He launched his flagship program, The Lenny Henry Show, in 1984, which alternated between sketch comedy and sitcom formats over two decades. During this period, he also spent three years as a DJ for BBC Radio 1 and developed popular recurring comedic characters.

Beyond stand-up and sketch comedy, Henry expanded into various media formats and philanthropic efforts. In 1985, he co-founded the charity Comic Relief alongside writer Richard Curtis. His television and film projects throughout the late 1980s and 1990s included starring roles in the sitcom Chef!, the film True Identity, the television movie Bernard and the Genie, and the drama Hope and Glory, as well as co-creating the series Neverwhere.

Beginning in the 2000s and 2010s, Henry moved toward more serious dramatic acting across stage and screen, alongside extensive voice acting work. He voiced characters in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Little Robots, and Big & Small. His later screen roles include appearances in Broadchurch, Doctor Who, and the fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. He also authored semi-autobiographical works, such as the television film Danny and the Human Zoo and the drama series Three Little Birds.

Throughout his career, Henry received notable public recognition, including being ranked eighteenth in a 2006 public poll of Britain's greatest television stars. In addition to his creative work, he served as chancellor of Birmingham City University for eight years, stepping down from the position at the conclusion of the 2023–24 academic year.
