Jürgen Vogel

Jürgen Peter Vogel is a German actor and producer recognized as one of the most successful character actors in German cinema. Born on April 29, 1968, in Hamburg, he established his career across film and television through a wide range of acting roles and production projects.

Vogel was raised in Hamburg as the son of a waiter and a housewife. During his youth, he worked as a child model and subsequently held various other jobs. He attended the Munich drama school for a single day before deciding to leave. In 1985, he relocated to Berlin, where he shared an apartment with fellow actor Richy Müller. Vogel noted that his decision to pursue an acting career was inspired by the movie Taxi Driver, which starred Robert De Niro.

Early recognition in Vogel's career arrived in 1989 when he received the Bayerischer Filmpreis as best young actor for his performance in Rosamunde. His major career breakthrough occurred in 1992 when he starred in the movie Little Sharks, also known by its German title Kleine Haie. His role in Little Sharks brought him widespread fame and earned him the Bayerischer Filmpreis for best actor that same year.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Vogel maintained an active presence in German screen productions. In 1994, he received a Telestar award for his work in Dann eben mit Gewalt, also titled Violence: The Last Resort. He was later awarded the Deutscher Filmpreis for best male lead in 1997 for his performance in Das Leben ist eine Baustelle, or Life is All You Get. He was named a Deutscher Shooting Star in 1998 and won a Jupiter award for best TV Star in 2000. He also received an Adolf-Grimme-Preis in 2001 for Das Phantom and a Goldene Kamera for best German actor in 2003 for Nackt und Scherbentanz, also known as Shattered Glass.

In 2006, Vogel achieved critical acclaim for his involvement as an actor, co-author, and co-producer on the film The Free Will, or Der freie Wille. For his work on the film, he earned the Silver Bear award, or Silberner Bär, in the category of special artistic performance. The film also earned him the Silver Hugo Award for best actor at the 42nd Chicago International Film Festival and the award for best male lead at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Vogel continued to receive honors for his work in subsequent years. In 2007, he won a Bayerischer Filmpreis for best male lead in Emmas Glück, or Emma's Bliss, and received the Ernst-Lubitsch-Preis for his roles in Ein Freund von mir, known as A Friend of Mine, and Wo ist Fred?, or Where is Fred?. In 2009, he received a Jupiter award for best actor for Die Welle, or The Wave, and was honored with the Herbert-Strate-Preis in 2010.

In his personal life, Vogel resides in Berlin and has six children. His first child, a daughter named Maria, was born in 1988 from a previous relationship. In 1997, he married Madeleine Sommerfeld, adopting her two sons, and the couple had a daughter born in 1999. Following their divorce, he had a son born in 2009 with assistant director Michelle Gornick. Vogel later welcomed his sixth child, a daughter born in 2019, with his fiancée, actress Natalia Belitski.
