Mauboy is recognized as one of Australia's most successful female artists, having achieved six top-ten albums and 16 top-twenty singles.
Mauboy was raised in Darwin by her mother Therese, an Aboriginal Australian woman of the Kuku Yalanji people, and her father Ferdy, an Indonesian-born electrician. Raised alongside four sisters in a musical household, she sang in a local church choir with her grandmother. She attended Wulagi Primary School and Sanderson High School, leaving in year 11 to pursue music. At age 14, Mauboy won the Telstra Road to Tamworth competition at the 2004 Tamworth Country Music Festival, leading to an early recording contract with Sony Music Australia and a country rendition of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun".
After her initial single was unsuccessful, Mauboy returned to Darwin before auditioning for Australian Idol in 2006 in Alice Springs. She progressed through the competition to the grand finale at the Sydney Opera House, finishing as runner-up. In 2007, she released a live album titled The Journey and briefly joined the girl group Young Divas before departing in 2008 to focus on her solo career. Her debut studio album, Been Waiting (2008), achieved double platinum certification and featured her first number-one single, "Burn", as well as the double-platinum single "Running Back" featuring Flo Rida.
Her music career continued with her second studio album, Get 'Em Girls (2010), which featured R&B tracks and four platinum-certified singles. Her third album, Beautiful (2013), incorporated dance, R&B, and pop elements and included top-ten singles such as "Pop a Bottle (Fill Me Up)" and "Never Be the Same". In October 2019, she released her fourth studio album, Hilda, which debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart.
Mauboy expanded into acting with featured roles in the films Bran Nue Dae (2010) and The Sapphires (2012), winning an AACTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for the latter. In 2016, she starred in the television drama series The Secret Daughter, a lead role created specifically for her. Her accompanying soundtrack album made her the first Indigenous artist to secure a number-one album on the ARIA Albums Chart.
Throughout her career, Mauboy has collaborated with international artists including Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, Jay Sean, Pitbull, and Jason Derulo, and toured with Beyoncé and Chris Brown.
