Anna Sawai

Anna Sawai is a Japanese performer recognized for her work across television, film, and music. After initially gaining public attention as a vocalist in the Japanese pop group Faky, she transitioned to full-time acting and established an international presence. She is widely known for her starring roles in major television productions, including the historical drama Shōgun, the epic series Pachinko, and the monster-franchise spin-off Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as well as her appearance in the action blockbuster F9.

Sawai was born on June 11, 1992, in Wellington, New Zealand, to Japanese parents. Her childhood included frequent international relocations due to her father's work for an electronics company, leading the family to reside in Hong Kong and the Philippines before relocating to Yokohama, Japan, when she was ten years old. Under the guidance of her mother, a piano instructor, Sawai began studying music and singing at three years old. She currently resides in Tokyo and speaks both English and Japanese fluently.

Her entertainment career began in Japan at age eleven, starring in a 2004 stage production of Annie. She signed with the entertainment agency Avex Inc. in 2006, undergoing training in music and dance. During this period, she made her Hollywood feature debut in the 2009 martial arts film Ninja Assassin. While attending Sophia University, Sawai was featured in brief musical ventures, including performing the American national anthem at a Major League Baseball game in Tokyo in 2012. In 2013, she debuted as a lead vocalist for the group Faky, participating in various musical projects and minor acting roles before leaving the ensemble in late 2018 to pursue acting exclusively.

Sawai's career accelerated in 2019 when she was cast in the British crime thriller series Giri/Haji and landed the role of Elle Lue in F9, which earned over $726 million globally upon its 2021 release. In 2022, she joined the main cast of Apple TV+'s adaptation of Pachinko, playing the newly created character Naomi and sharing an Independent Spirit Award with her castmates. She followed this with a lead role as Cate Randa in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which launched in late 2023.

In 2024, Sawai achieved major critical recognition for her performance as Lady Mariko in the FX historical drama Shōgun. Her portrayal earned her widespread acclaim and numerous accolades, including a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Golden Globe Award, and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. This victory made her the first Japanese actress—and the first actress of Asian descent in her category—to win a Primetime Emmy. That same year, Time magazine included her on its 100 Next list.

Following her award-winning success, Sawai expanded into major brand partnerships, serving as an ambassador for luxury labels Cartier and Dior, while receiving the inaugural Fashion Newcomer Style Award from WWD. Looking ahead, she has been cast in several upcoming feature films, including David Leitch's How to Rob a Bank, the drama Enemies, the comedy-drama (Saint) Peter, and Sam Mendes' upcoming Beatles cinematic series, in which she will portray artist Yoko Ono.
