About Tyler Wright

Tyler Wright is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who appeared in 613 National Hockey League (NHL) games over the course of his career. During his time on the ice, he competed for several franchises, including the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Following his retirement as an athlete, he transitioned into executive and managerial roles, serving as a development coach and leading amateur scouting and player personnel departments for multiple organizations.

Born in Canora, Saskatchewan, Wright grew up in the nearby town of Kamsack. He began his path toward professional hockey in major junior hockey with the Swift Current Broncos. As a rookie during the 1989–90 season, he recorded 32 points. He increased his production the following year, scoring 41 goals and collecting 92 points over 66 contests. In his final season with the team in 1991–92, he registered 36 goals and 82 points across 63 games. His junior achievements led to him being selected 12th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 1991 NHL draft.

After entering the Oilers system, Wright split time between the NHL club and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Cape Breton Oilers, across the 1992–93 and 1993–94 campaigns. In June 1996, Edmonton traded him to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a seventh-round draft selection. After playing 45 games for Pittsburgh in 1996–97, he established himself as a full-time starter the next season, appearing in all 82 regular-season games, helping Pittsburgh capture the Northeast Division title, and making his initial playoff appearances.

During the 1998–99 campaign, Wright went without a point across 61 regular-season contests, setting an NHL record for most games played in a single season without registering a point. He bounced back in 1999–2000 by scoring 12 goals and 22 points in 50 games, later adding four postseason points and his first playoff goal against the Washington Capitals. In June 2000, the Columbus Blue Jackets selected Wright in the NHL Expansion Draft. He became a key contributor for Columbus, scoring 16 goals in his initial year and later achieving two rare hat tricks that included even-strength, power-play, and short-handed goals in single games.

During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, Wright played in Switzerland with second-division team EHC Biel. In November 2005, Columbus traded him to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, where he spent his final NHL season before the club bought out his contract in June 2006. Internationally, Wright represented Canada at the 1992 and 1993 World Junior Championships, serving as an alternate captain on the gold-medal-winning 1993 roster. He also joined the senior national team for the 2002 World Championship.

Wright began his post-playing career in July 2007 by rejoining Columbus as a development coach focused on prospect progression across junior, college, and minor league levels. He resigned in July 2013 to become the director of amateur scouting for the Detroit Red Wings. In July 2019, he departed Detroit to accept a role in Edmonton as director of player personnel and amateur scouting. Wright and the Oilers mutually decided to part ways in August 2023.
