Sally Fitzgibbons

Sally Fitzgibbons, born on 19 December 1990, is an Australian professional surfer who competed on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour. She gained international prominence in women's surfing, reaching the number one world ranking in June 2019 following a victory at the Rio Pro.

Fitzgibbons grew up in Gerroa, New South Wales, and attended Kiama High School. During her youth, she participated in several sports, representing her state and country in athletics, touch football, soccer, surfing, and cross-country running. In athletics, she won gold medals in both the 800-metre and 1500-metre events at the 2007 Australian Youth Olympic Festival. She is also a third cousin of former Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Bosnich.

Fitzgibbons began surfing at an early age, winning the Icon All-Girls Open Event at Lennox Head in 2006. At age 14, she became the youngest surfer to win an ASP Pro Junior event while also placing second at the World Qualifying Series (WQS) Billabong Easter Girls Festival. She won the Australasian Pro Junior Series in 2007 and 2008. In international junior competition, she finished second at the International Surfing Association (ISA) U18 World Surfing Titles in Brazil at age 15, won the title in Portugal at age 16, and subsequently earned the Billabong ASP U21 World Title, the ISA World Games Open Title, and the junior women's world surfing championship.

In 2008, Fitzgibbons secured her qualification for the World Surfing Tour during the first five events of the WQS, setting a record as the youngest qualifier in ASP history. During her 2009 rookie season on the elite tour, she finished fifth overall in the rankings and earned a victory at the WQS event in Portugal.

Fitzgibbons established herself as a top contender on the ASP World Tour over the following seasons, finishing as runner-up for the World Title in 2010, 2011, and 2012. In 2011, she won ASP World Tour events at Bells Beach, Taranaki in New Zealand, and the US Open of Surfing in California, as well as the Swatch Girls Pro in France. In 2012, she won the Australian Open, the Hunter Ports Women's Classic, a second consecutive Bells Beach title, and the Rio Pro. Her win at the Australian Open made her the first surfer to hold both the Australian Open and US Open titles simultaneously.

Her success continued with tour victories at the Roxy Pro France in 2013, as well as the Rio Pro and Fiji Pro in 2014. After finishing in the top eight of the 2019 WSL World Tour, she qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she reached the quarterfinals and finished fifth overall. In June 2021, Fitzgibbons won a gold medal at the ISA World Games in El Salvador, securing her third ISA World Title—the most held by a female surfer—and her fourth ISA gold medal overall.

Throughout her career, Fitzgibbons has received numerous peer and industry accolades, including three honours at the 2012 ASP World Surfing Awards: World Tour runner-up, the peer-voted ASP Surfers' Surfer award, and Women's ASP Heat of the Year alongside Carissa Moore. Outside of surfing, she is an avid follower of Australian sports, supporting the St George Illawarra Dragons in the National Rugby League and the Geelong Cats in the Australian Football League.
