Stephanie Gilmore

Stephanie Louise Gilmore, born on 29 January 1988 in Murwillumbah, New South Wales, is an Australian professional surfer who has captured eight women's World Surf League (WSL) championship titles. Holding the record for the highest number of world titles and event victories in women's professional surfing history, she stands as the sole competitor to secure a world crown during a rookie tour season, subsequently launching a four-year championship streak.

Gilmore grew up alongside two older sisters in a coastal household supported by a primary school teacher mother and a surfing father. Her initial exposure to wave riding occurred around age nine, when her father towed her on a boogie board off the coast of Kingscliff. The family routinely spent school vacations camping and surfing in Byron Bay. Gilmore completed her secondary education at Kingscliff High School, graduating in 2005 shortly after taking part in her second junior world championship.

Her professional trajectory began at age seventeen when she entered world tour events as a wildcard entrant, taking victory at the 2005 Roxy Pro Gold Coast. After securing another wildcard win against Layne Beachley at the 2006 Beachley Classic and finishing second in the qualifying series, Gilmore joined the 2007 ASP World Tour. During her maiden tour year, she accumulated key victories at Bells Beach, Sydney, and Maui, becoming the first rookie in tour history to earn the world title.

Gilmore maintained her dominance by securing three additional consecutive world crowns from 2008 through 2010. Her achievements during this era earned her the 2010 Laureus World Sports Award for Action Sportsperson of the Year as well as induction into the Surfers' Hall of Fame. In late December 2010, she sustained head injuries and a fractured wrist during a physical assault outside her apartment building. The resulting recovery period and persistent physical discomfort impacted her performance throughout the 2011 season, ending her title streak with a third-place finish.

Gilmore reclaimed the world championship in 2012 following event wins in Australia, New Zealand, and France. After a sub-par 2013 season hampered by fatigue and a foot injury, she captured her sixth world title in 2014. Following several inconsistent seasons, she added a seventh world title in 2018. In 2022, competing as the fifth seed in the WSL finals, Gilmore swept her heats to earn her eighth world title against Carissa Moore. She subsequently stepped away from professional competition, taking a hiatus during 2024 and 2025.

Beyond her competitive achievements, Gilmore has been an influential figure in advancing gender equity within surfing, advocating for equal priority in wave selection and identical prize purses for female competitors. Her success has also translated into significant commercial visibility; in 2015, she was identified as Australia's highest-earning female athlete, securing major sponsorship agreements with brands such as Rip Curl and Roxy.
