Over her multi-decade career, Mowry has starred in numerous sitcoms, feature films, and reality programs, while also expanding into publishing, business ventures, and music.

Mowry was born in Gelnhausen, West Germany, to Darlene Renée Mowry and Timothy John Mowry. Both of her parents served in the U.S. Army and reached the rank of Sergeant. Her father later became a correctional officer with the Glendale Police Department, while her mother managed her children's early music group and worked as a security guard. Mowry is two minutes younger than her twin sister, Tamera, and has two younger brothers, Tahj and Tavior. Her family background includes British, Irish, and Afro-Bahamian ancestry, as well as lineage tracing back to Mayflower passenger William Brewster.

While stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, Mowry and her sister began competing in talent shows and pageants. In the early 1990s, they formed the R&B group Voices, releasing the 1992 single "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!", which reached No. 72 on the Billboard Hot 100. At age 12, the family relocated to Los Angeles, California, where the sisters began appearing in commercials and small acting roles. After a producer spotted them on the set of Full House, Sister, Sister was developed for them, running on ABC and later The WB. During its run, the sisters also voiced characters on the animated series Detention and made crossover appearances on shows such as Smart Guy and The Jamie Foxx Show.

After Sister, Sister ended, Mowry studied psychology at Pepperdine University and spent time studying humanities and Italian in Europe. She returned to feature films with a role in the comedy The Hot Chick (2002) and voiced Sasha in the animated series Bratz from 2005 to 2006. Mowry and her sister co-starred in the films Seventeen Again (2000), Twitches (2005), and Twitches Too (2007). In 2006, Mowry was cast as Melanie Barnett in the comedy-drama series The Game, a role she held until 2012 before returning in 2015, earning nominations for a Teen Choice Award and an NAACP Image Award.

Mowry's additional acting projects include the films The Mistle-Tones (2012), Baggage Claim (2013), and Indivisible (2018).
