About Sally Pearson
Sally Pearson, OAM (née McLellan), born 19 September 1986, is a retired Australian athlete who competed in the 100 metre hurdles. She is best known as the 2012 Olympic champion and a two-time World champion in the 100 metres hurdles, having won titles in 2011 and 2017. She also earned silver medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2013 World Championships, establishing herself as one of Australia's premier track and field competitors.
Pearson was born in Sydney and moved to Birdsville, Queensland, at age eight before settling on the Gold Coast. Raised by her single mother, Anne, she attended Helensvale State High School. Her athletic talent was noticed during primary school by coach Sharon Hannan, who trained her until 2013. Pearson married her high school partner, Kieran Pearson, in April 2010.
Pearson gained national prominence in 2001 by winning the Australian Youth 100 metre and 90 metre hurdles titles at age 14. She made her international debut at the 2003 World Youth Championships in Sherbrooke, Canada, winning gold in the 100 metre hurdles. Later that year, she represented Australia at the open World Championships in Paris as part of the 4 × 100 metre relay team, followed by a bronze medal in the 100 metres at the 2004 World Junior Championships.
After competing in both sprint and hurdles events early in her career, Pearson focused exclusively on the 100 metre hurdles ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where she won the silver medal. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, she won gold in the 100 metre hurdles after experiencing a disqualification in the 100 metre sprint. Pearson claimed gold at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu with an Oceanian and Australian record time of 12.28 seconds. She then secured Olympic gold at the 2012 London Olympics with a new Olympic record time of 12.35 seconds.
Despite facing major injuries, including a broken wrist in 2015 and a hamstring injury that kept her out of the 2016 Rio Olympics, Pearson returned to win her second World Championship title in London in 2017. An Achilles tendon injury led to her withdrawal from the 2018 Commonwealth Games. On 5 August 2019, Pearson announced her retirement from competitive athletics after a 16-year career, stating that her body was no longer prepared for the 2020 Olympic Games.
Throughout her career, Pearson received numerous awards, including the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2014, the IAAF Female Athlete of the Year award in 2011, and multiple Athletics Australia Female Athlete of the Year honors. She was twice awarded the Sport Australia Hall of Fame's The Don Award and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2024. Following her track career, Pearson transitioned into media, serving as a sport presenter for Seven News Gold Coast, participating in Dancing with the Stars, and joining Sunrise as a reporter in February 2025.
