Phoebe Tonkin

Phoebe Jane Elizabeth Tonkin is an Australian actress born on 12 July 1989. She is best known for her roles in both Australian and American television series and feature films. Her accolades include an AACTA Award for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series, along with a nomination for a Logie Award.

Tonkin was born and raised in Sydney, New South Wales, growing up in the suburb of Mosman. At four years old, she began attending dance courses in classical ballet, hip hop, contemporary dance, and tap dance. She started taking courses at the Australian Theatre for Young People at the Wharf Theatre at age 12, and later graduated from Queenwood School for Girls.

Tonkin began her professional acting career on Australian television. In 2005, she was cast as Cleo Sertori in the Network Ten fantasy series H2O: Just Add Water. The show premiered in 2006, ran for three seasons, and earned Tonkin an Australian Film Institute Award nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Television Series. During this period, she also appeared on Packed to the Rafters and Home and Away. She made her feature film debut in 2010 as Fiona Maxwell in the apocalyptic war film Tomorrow, When the War Began, and subsequently co-starred in the horror film Bait 3D.

In January 2011, Tonkin moved to Los Angeles to pursue an international acting career. She was cast as Faye Chamberlain in The CW's supernatural drama series The Secret Circle, earning acclaim as a breakout performer. Tonkin went on to join the cast of The CW's The Vampire Diaries as Hayley Marshall, a role she continued as a main cast member in its spin-off series, The Originals, from 2013 to 2018.

Tonkin expanded her portfolio with roles in the SBS miniseries Safe Harbour, the Stan series Bloom, an episode of The Affair, and Damien Chazelle's film Babylon. She also wrote and directed the short film Furlough. In 2024, Tonkin starred in the Netflix miniseries Boy Swallows Universe, winning the AACTA Award for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series and earning a Logie Award nomination. That same year, she starred in the film Kid Snow, earning an AACTA nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Film. Her other credits include the podcast The Foxes of Hydesville, the film And On The Eighth Day, and the series adaptation of The Dark Lake.

Offscreen, Tonkin is a fashion ambassador for brands including Chanel, Tiffany and Co., and Smythson. In 2020, she launched her own sustainable loungewear brand, Lesjour!. She is active in advocacy, serving as a Global and National Ambassador for Plan International, supporting environmental causes with the NRDC, and participating in the Tribeca Chanel Women's Filmmaker Program. Tonkin married art dealer Bernard Lagrange in May 2025.
